Pat McGrath’s Top Makeup Trends for Spring

British makeup artist and P&G beauty creative design director, Pat McGrath, is already a legend in the high fashion world of makeup at 40 years old. She is one of the most in-demand artists in the world and her work is regularly featured in Vogue, W, i-D, Harper’s Bazaar and countless other glossies. She’s worked with everyone from Steven Meisel to Helmut Newton and is responsible for the runway looks at some of the biggest shows– think Gucci, John Galliano, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy, just to name a few.

McGrath recently hosted an intimate event in which she discussed some of the Spring 2011 season’s major makeup trends. Here are the top 3.

1. Red, Red, Red

Seen on the runway at Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and Viktor & Rolf, red was used to signal a return to glamour and classic beauty by way of a high-drama popping lip.

To create this look, pale out the skin using foundation (Covergirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundation is a favorite of McGrath’s), work in false lashes and black eyeliner to give eyes a graphic touch, before brightening the under eye area with YSL Touche Eclat, and then finish the look with bright red lipstick, which you can opt to top off with gloss.

2. Metallics

Seen on the runway at Valentino, Prada, John Galliano, Anna Sui, and Louis Vuitton. When it comes to metallics, you can go the masculine-inspired route as seen at Prada, or the more feminine route at Anna Sui.

McGrath suggests creating beautiful, natural slightly paled-out skin using Covergirl NaturalLuxe Silk Foundation, and keeping brows groomed and made to look full, bold, and feathery like boy brows using Covergirl Brow and Eye Makers. Then, use a light silvery shade on your lids and give your lips a hint of color and hydration with Covergirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm in Marble. For the latter look, McGrath suggests starting with foundation once again, then lining the waterline with Dolce & Gabbana Luminous Cheek Color in Tan inside the waterline of the eyes. Covergirl Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire should then be applied to the lid and beneath the lower lash line, before adding Anna Sui Color Powder in #501 over the shadow on the lid and inner eye corners. Top-off lashes with mascara and warm the cheeks with warm peach blush. Finish the look with Covergirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm in Marble.

3. Minimal vs. Maximal Beauty
