Celebrity Makeup Artist Kate Lee: a tFS Interview

INDUSTRY BREAK: I began my career in the early 90s, but my desire to paint faces emerged in kindergarten, when I would use my paints on others instead of the easel! My passion for makeup actually began in the mid-80s. Musicians of that time were so flamboyant: Boy George, Toyah Wilcox, and The Human League. They all made me fall in love with cosmetics and inspired me to choose makeup as my career path. When I was 11, I took my options at school to build a potential career in the beauty industry. I studied for three years to become an aesthetician with the sole intention of attending the London School of Fashion, part of the London Institute, which was the only school in England to offer further education in makeup. I graduated amongst some of London’s great fashion industry leaders like Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen. After graduating, I took a part-time job at Shu Uemura and began working with amazing makeup artists on the collections in Paris, New York, and London. Carole Lasnier and Linda Cantello where huge inspirations to me, but most notably, my mentor to this day, Val Garland, changed my approach to my art, the business, and inspired me to finesse my skills.

1. Chanel Pro Lumiere Foundation – It is the most versatile and extraordinary product.

2. Crealine H20 – I cannot live without this for so many reasons!

3. Kanebo UV Bronzing Gel – It’s a transparent tanning and luminizing product that leaves no residue or sparkly particles.

4. Nars Oil-Free Primer – Gives a great velvety finish which helps the product stay put, and it is perfect for underneath any type of foundation.

5. Anastasia Clear Brow Gel – Sets like concrete, and does not flake!

FAVORITE LOOK: Keira Knightley at the Venice film Festival for her movie Atonement (left). It was an honor to be there; I spent hours looking up at all the great beauties that had graced the carpet since the event began and understood the gravity of creating a beautiful look that would not age or be forgotten. She wore a Chanel gown, and looked every inch the movie star that she is. I was so proud!
