NYFW Beauty with Celebrity and Runway Stylist Danilo

Few hair stylists have the talent and personality that could attract a room full of bloggers and online editors to an 8 A.M. breakfast immediately following the end of New York Fashion Week, but so was the case at an event hosted by Pantene celebrity and runway stylist and global ambassador Danilo. Having styled countless shows from New York to Paris, countless editorials from Elle to Vogue, and with a background that includes working at Oribe and Thierry Mugler, the affable stylist – decked out in a pink shirt and hat – offered his insight into this season’s trends as well as the thought process behind some of the looks he worked on this season.

Cushnie et Ochs

When talking about the Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2012 show, Danilo said that he sees a level of craftsmanship in their work that made their show one of the most exciting for him to work on. Their show, he says, represented one of the major beauty trends we saw this season – a more polished take on casual hair. In the case of this particular show, that meant slicked-back hair, a trend we saw not only here but at countless other shows including BCBG, Donna Karan, and Victoria Beckham. Danilo added that makeup artists love this look (naturally!) as it’s all about the face.

L.A.M.B.

The look at Cushnie et Ochs tied into a similar trend we saw at the likes of Derek Lam where Orlando Pita created a very strict ponytail. The season had a distinct focus on a heightened version of simplicity; Danilo called it the “idealism of simple hair,” but with more stylized finishes. Similarly, the look Danilo created at L.A.M.B. tied into an everyday hair staple – the top knot. He noted that Gwen Stefani was inspired by the beauty of Indian women and the effortless way they wear their hair up in a knot. Using a drawstring, he created a duo of colors to make this classic everyday look more edgy. The resulting style is a great alternative for those looking to get the Daphne Guinness dual hair color look, but wary of dying their hair. Danilo also pointed out that a strict top knot is “like a built-in face-lift!”

Danilo also remarked that this season brought out a lot of center parts, but he made a point of underscoring that they aren’t easy to pull off because “when you put a balancing line down your face, that parting can accentuate the differences between both sides.” He added that he reserves it for special occasions and that he recommends cheating a little with a slightly off-center part.

The biggest takeaway from this season, however, according to the stylist, is that it’s all about healthy hair. “You can experiment with trends unless you have a healthy base,” and to that end, Danilo pointed to the importance of skincare for hair, which namely entails taking care of your scalp.

As a final tidbit he briefly spoke about the two seasons he spent on America’s Next Top Model which he prefaced by saying he would never again do reality TV — unless it were “a show called Get Real.” As one might expect, everything is done to ensure that the maximum amount of drama makes it to air and shortly before Danilo left, one of the contestants got impetigo. Unfortunately for her and her roommates, the cameras preferred filming her in the house over sending her to the hospital to get treatment for the skin infection – one of the final straws for Danilo, and I would agree — quite the turnoff!
