Scarlett Johansson: Beauty Look of the Week

Who: Scarlett Johansson

Where: New York premiere of ‘We Bought a Zoo’

Why we like it: Scarlett’s retro victory roll hairstyle is very polished but her blush toned lip and sleel blue eye have a softer, more undone feel. This look would be perfect for a holiday party.

How to get it at home: Start by prepping your base with a smoothing primer such as Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer $36. Next, apply NARS’ Sheer Glow Foundation $42, which allows for both light and medium coverage due to its buildable nature. To start the eye, prime all over the lid with Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube in Original $19. This will keep the shadow from creasing and fading thoughout the day or night. Take Make Up For Ever’s Eyeshadow in Metallic Midnight Blue $19 and apply across the lid and under the lashline. With a clean crease brush, blend the edges slightly for a softer line just above the crease. Take a small shadow brush and add some of NARS’ Single Eyeshadow in Night Life $23 to the edges of the shadow line and a touch in the center of the lid for more depth.

Next, take a liner such as Givenchy’s Magic Khol Eye Liner Pencil in Black $22, and line the waterline on the top and bottom of your eye. If you’re looking for a more smoky look than Scarlett’s, apply some of the khol on top of your upper lash line and blend outwards slightly. Finish off your eyes by combing your lashes and applying with one coat of Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara $22, this will give you that long and wispy look that Scarlett has. Apply NARS’ Pure Matte Lipstick  in Montego Bay $25 to your lips and blot for a blush toned stain. If you want, you can take a small amount of this lipstick on your finger and blend it in your cheeks for a subtle glow but this look works just as well with a clean face.

While Scarlett’s victory rolls may be a bit too polished for everyday wear, you can take your cue from her and integrate the 40s style into a long and wavy look by adding just one or two rolls to frame the face. To get a victory roll, lightly tease or backcomb a section of your hair from the back and smooth the hair over the front section. This will add lift and make it easier to secure the roll. Next, wind your hair over your fingers to form a loop and roll it inwards towards your head. Be sure to tuck the tail in and secure with a pin or two hidden on the underside and spray liberally with hairspray.
