Once known as a quick fix, messy ponytails are anything but a last-minute resort these days. Sported on the red carpet and the runway, this carefree 'do has achieved supreme status. Whether you're wearing a simple T-shirt and denim cut-offs or a couture ensemble, the undone pony will give your style rock star edge and a ton of personality.
Thankfully, you don't have to be a hair guru to master this laid-back sexy style. In fact, it only takes 4 simple steps and about 5 minutes to perfect. And remember, unwashed hair will give you that needed texture and further hold, so be sure to keep your locks dirty but clean by investing in some quality dry shampoo.
Use Your Fingers
Start off by blow drying your hair loosely using your fingertips. By using your fingers rather than a hairbrush, you will get a piecey result instead of sleek strands. Follow by sectioning off front pieces of your hair using your ears as a guide. To get Blake Lively's messy pony, be sure to part your hair to the side before you begin styling.

Backcomb the back sections of your hair and pull it back to a mid or low ponytail using a neutral colored hair elastic. To give your eveningwear a more modern edge, take note of Selena Gomez's low messy pony. Decorative without feeling overly stuffy, low messy ponytails are young and one of the biggest celebrity hair trends this fall.

Now, take the front section of your hair and backcomb it. Give your look a soft elegance a la Rachel Bilson by twisting a few pieces of your hair including the front two with a curling iron. Keep the heat setting to a minimum in order to avoid stiff curls. Brush out the pieces with your fingers to keep them from looking too ornate.

Finish and Hold
Finish the look by working dry shampoo into the top of the ponytail, a great way to get rid of oily residue while giving your locks further texture. Add hairspray to the back for extra hold. To give your messy tail a fresh outlook, take the front pieces and twist them all the way through. Braids work too and will give your hair a bohemian edge. Secure the twisted (or braided) pieces with bobby pins and viola!, you've got a Dianna-Agron-inspired 'do.
