Celeb Makeup Artist Julianne Kaye Talks Spring Trends and ‘Fashion Star’ Beauty Secrets

Julianne Kaye: I especially love the mod trend. I never ever get sick of seeing a throwback to 60s makeup; it always looks so cool. There’s just something about that era. I also love seeing color all over the runway, lots of emerald green and aquamarine hues for the eyes. I think if you add a pop of color to your eyes the right way, it can be really fashion-forward and cool.

tFS: For those less adventurous makeup consumers, what’s one trend worth trying this spring?

JK: Try a bright lip color. Coral is huge this season and I promise you, there’s a coral that would be right for you, you just have to choose the right shade (pink undertones, go more pinky coral, yellow undertones go more orange coral). A lot of women always go for the heavy eye but I think that a colorful lip looks really fun and youthful.

tFS: You’re back on Fashion Star this season! Can you give us any backstage beauty scoop on what goes into making these runway-ready looks?

JK: Since I’m on a reality show, I don’t get the luxury of being able to plan and demo the looks, so it can be challenging at times when I see a collection and feel very strongly about sending an on-trend tropical green eye down the runway and the contestant is like, no way. I leaned on Maybelline’s Color Tattoo a lot to create intense eyes because you can create a super dramatic look in seconds with an ink based gel shadow.

tFS: What are some of your backstage product mainstays for the show?

JK: I am completely obsessed with the new Color Whisper lipsticks and the Color Sensational Vivids. The Whispers are really beautiful, creamy lipsticks that come in pastel hues like lilac, baby doll pink and a sort of creamsicle looking color; they’re quite unique! The Color Sensational Vivids are just awesome, jam-packed with neon-pigmented color, so bright and bold, perfect for spring!

tFS: On Fashion Star, as in real life, it’s so important to complement the looks the designers are showing with makeup. What tips do you have for complementing your outfit with makeup?

JK: I would say that balance is probably the most important thing to factor in when doing your makeup. If you’re going to go for a fun pop of color on the eyes, then make sure that your skin looks fresh and that you have a sheer wash of color on the lips and vice versa for eyes. If you’re going for a bright lip then do a champagne shimmer on the lids and just do mascara!

tFS: What’s the number one beauty trick you’ve got up your sleeve?

JK: Everyone seems surprised when I give them this tip, I wish I could trademark it or something! When you want the perfect eyeliner flick, or what most people like to call the cat eye, trace a pencil or felt tip liner along the edge of a sticky note or business card. Make it at an angle that you desire then trace along the edge using it as a stencil. When you remove the paper, you will have a perfectly crisp edge.

tFS: Any other makeup tips?

JK: A great little trick that comes in handy when you’re attempting to wear a bold colored lip like red or coral is to apply your lip shade before you do your eye makeup. This really just makes it easier to know when to stop and find the perfect balance between your eye makeup and a vibrant lip color. And for a fuller pout, instead of over-drawing your lips, add a champagne shimmer shadow around the perimeter of your mouth, then fill in with a pale gloss. You can also add the same champagne shimmer to the center of your bottom lip, then gloss. This technique helps catch light and creates the illusion of a more full, kissable mouth.
