Take Inspiration From Hailee Steinfeld’s Striking Met Gala Look

Who: Hailee Steinfeld

Where: ‘PUNK: Chaos to Couture’ Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Why we like it: It’s not very often that we take tips from 16-year-olds, but this striking look serves as perfect spring beauty inspiration. Emerald may be the color of the year, but it takes a brave soul to don as much as Hailee here. For a more subtle look, we’d pair the lilac lip with an emerald lined eye or bright wash of shadow.

How to get it at home: If you paid any attention to the latest collections, you’ll know matte skin is back. But one major problem with matte skin is that it can look dull, caked on and mask-like. You can solve that by using a product such as Jouer’s Matte Moisture Tint, $38, which will hydrate the skin without leaving a dewy finish. You want to keep your skin as clear as possible when you’re rocking a statement eye, so use a sheer blush, such as Josie Maran’s Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée in Pink Escape, $22, and blend it well into the skin. Now onto the eye — most of us wish we had brows as full as Hailee’s but even if you don’t, simply grooming them with Anastasia’s Brow Gel, $22, could add a lot of definition.

An easy place to start if you’re looking for the depth of color seen here is with a pencil shadow, such as Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Shadow in 8E Matte Green, $20. Using the point, you can plot out the area you want filled, fill it to your liking, then use a clean blending brush to soften out the edges. If you want to really saturate your look with green, try using a green liner, such as Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Ivy Shimmer Ink, $23. Finish off your eyes with a few coats of your favorite mascara. If you’re the type to change mascaras all the time, it might be worth trying the Eyeko Mascara Wardrobe, $28, which includes three of its signature brushes to customize your lashes. Last but not least, slick your lips with a lilac gloss, such as Dolce & Gabbana’s The Lipgloss Ultra-Shine Lipgloss in Pink Sapphire 139, $31.
