As celebrities get more adventurous on the red carpet we tend to rely less on the runway for inspiration, but the catwalk is still the best place to spot trends months before they hit the shops. This year, we saw a few standout trends that lasted long enough to make an impact in the real world. Here are a few of our favorite looks from 2013's catwalks.
Derek Lam Fall 2013
Metallics may be old news but we love the subtle shimmer used here. Proof that even the most tired trends can be reinvented.
Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2013
By using a darker wine-toned red rather than the traditional ruby hue, the Italian dream team managed to modernize this classic look.
Zuhar Murad Fall 2013 Haute Couture
One of the biggest trends of this year was the neo-grunge girl. We love the use of gunmetal grey in this smoky eye. It not only lightens up the look but also adds dimension.
Prabal Gurung Spring 2014
The orange lip was big news this year. It popped up on the runways across the world and we can say with some confidence that it was the lip color of the year.
Etro Spring 2014
Natural makeup can be tricky to navigate because you want to look polished without using a ton of product. We love this look because the features all have definition without a ton of color. It's proof of the power of taupe.
Oscar De La Renta Spring 2014
Count on Oscar to deliver a glamorous alternative to the modern grunge girl. This look pairs a strong brow and contoured face with dewy skin resulting in a thoroughly modern interpretation of the look.
Rachel Zoe Spring 2014
We saw many, many braids on the catwalks this year but it wasn't the intricate plaits or crowns that stood out but instead the artful mess that is this look. It might be a nightmare to brush out but its worth it for the result.
Jason Wu Spring 2014
The low pony was another standout trend this year and we love this dressed up version.
Mulberry Spring 2014
With its slightly smudged liner and flawless base, this look is a perfect example of the slightly undone trend from 2013. We can look forward to seeing more of this next year.
Alexander Wang Spring 2014
This hair! Who doesn't want hair that looks as effortless as this? End of.
