Get Taylor Swift’s Dressed Up Pony at Home

Who: Taylor Swift

Where: The 56th Annual Grammy Awards

Why we like it: Awards season hair is always a bit predictable but we loved Taylor’s take on a classic day two look, the sporty ponytail. This is a great date look because once it’s done, there’s no touching up, no worrying about pins or misplaced curls so you can sit back and relax. It’s playful and chic but still projects a coveted low maintenance vibe.

How to get it at home: Wash and condition your hair then loosely towel dry. Apply a mousse or styling cream, such as Living Proof’s Full Thickening Cream ($26), in sections covering your whole head. Many women make the mistake of simply running their fingers through their hair with product but, as you can imagine, that only coats the outer layer of hair and can result in inconsistent texture. Instead, try using a clip to separate your hair into quarters so you make sure each section is properly coated.

Next, blow dry your hair with an efficient dryer, such as T3’s Featherweight 2 ($200), until it is 75% dry. Then go back in small sections using a medium barrelled brush, such as Drybar’s Full pint Medium Round Brush ($40), and style. Be sure to style the front section forward over your forehead. Once it’s dry, spray through with a thickening hairspray (are you seeing a trend here? Volume = good), such as Bumble and bumble’s Thickening Dryspun Finish ($29), and brush through with a large paddle brush. If you have naturally curly or wavy hair, you can now simply gather your hair in a ponytail and give it one final spritz of hairspray. If your hair is naturally straight or flat, try backcombing a small section around the crown to give more lift, then style into the ponytail.
