We spoke with long time beauty vet Petra Strand, founder of Pixi by Petra at Target, to get her expert input on some of the most buzzed about runway beauty looks of the season.
Carolina Herrera: Classy & Ladylike
"This elegant makeup look is one you can easily do at home. For defined brows like this, first use a pencil to fill in and then set and shape with a tinted brow gel. For the eyes, use a shimmering taupe shadow all the way from lash line to brow bone. Keep cheeks soft with a pale pink and highlight top of cheekbones with a cream pearl shade. Lips like these are achieved by using a glossy stain in a cool pink shade."
Jason Wu: Simple & Pretty
"This is a lovely look that is perfect for everyday. Flawless skin with a satin-matte finish is the base of this look. A palette with a bronzer and cheek color is a must-have for every girl’s makeup kit. For this look, apply the bronzer under cheekbones to contour and a pink or rose cheek color on the cheekbones and eyelids. Finish off eyes by applying a thin line of black liquid liner as close to the lash root as you can get, curling lashes, and filling in brows with a soft color that matches your hair color. Highlight inner corner of eye, under brow and on top of cheekbones with a nude shimmer. This is the kind of look where you look perfect but not as if you have tried too hard!"
Ruffian: Retro Glam
"This look reminds me of the looks I grew up seeing on TV shows like Dynasty and Dallas! Very 70s, very maximalist, and for me – having grown up in Sweden – very daring and exotic. Deep eyes like this are easy to achieve with a duo liner and powder (try Pixi Lid & Line in Smoky Grey) – first line eyes all around and then go over with powder to smudge out and up, following your eye shape. Complexion is flawless and velvety with a tinted powder, cheeks are contoured and lips are bold with a crimson or cranberry shade topped off with a super high-shine lip lacquer. Now Lets go shopping in Beverly Hills!"
Christian Siriano: All About the Eyes
"Fresh dewy skin always looks good – here it’s teamed with a winged cat-eye and then lots of black eye shadow on top. The nice thing with this look, I think, is the inner rim liner that contours the whole eye, done by tightlining both upper and lower inner rims for a smoky effect. This is easy to do at home: use a waterproof eye liner and gently pat your inner rim dry with a cotton swab before applying liner for maximum wear. Lips are pale and whitish (try Pixi Succulent Lip Twin in Vanilla Light) which I really like. Brows are defined but pale. The look is finished off with contouring of cheeks with a matte bronzer under cheekbones."
Zimmermann: Elongated Brows & Wine-Stained Lips
"Elongate brows by making an imaginary diagonal line from your nostril up past outer corner of eye — that’s where you will end your brow. Make a small dot there with a brow pencil (try Pixi Natural Brow Duo). Now place your brow pencil straight upward from your nostril – that’s where you will start your brow. Make a small dot there as well. Now fill in brows with a deep color – one shade deeper than your hair color makes more dramatic brows like these. Contour cheeks and eyes with a warm-hued bronzer and apply a nude eye liner (try Pixi Eye Bright Liner) to inner rims of eyes to 'wake' them up. Now tint lips in a deep wine color and blot to remove all shine."
Alexander Wang: Futuristic & Bare
"Unless you are auditioning for the new Star Trek movie, this is not a look that I would recommend. Bleached brows and dead looking skin is not a good everyday look. However, on the runway it’s very effective and strong looking, very futuristic and androgynous. If you do want to recreate it or make a more wearable version of this look, use 'no-color' colors like taupe and matte brown for sculpting cheeks. Add a hint of highlighter on top of cheekbones, and a non-glossy but slightly dewy lip balm onto lips (try Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Comfort Clear). Tint lashes with a natural-looking mascara and you are done! Time for that 60s party!"
Cushnie Et Ochs: Simply Striking
"I love this look: the soft skin, the pale pink lips with a hint of luster, and of course the stand out feature of a really winged liner! This look is sensual and classy at the same time, and perfect to recreate for a party or date night. Very ladylike. You only need two key products to do this eye perfectly: (1) a great liquid liner and (2) a neutral base and highlighter. The trick to apply a good liquid liner is to support your hand with your elbow on a table. Looking down into a mirror, start at the center of lashline and use short strokes – build on them slowly so that you have more control. Keep a cotton swab soaked in eye makeup remover for touch ups and brush on your foundation/concealer after to clean up the edges."
"This, to me, is a look that suits a girl with attitude! The lacquered black liner and the matte stained red lips are bold and 'street.' The look belongs in a big city like London or NY, and if you have a creative job you can wear it to work too. Having lips and eyes stand out at the same time works if you have the attitude to go with it. Keep the rest clean – skin and brows. Lips like this are easily created with a bold lip stain (try Pixi Lip Blush in Love) – by using a stain, you don’t have to worry about it fading or transferring to your teeth. For the liner, apply the most waterproof eye pencil or liquid liner you can find and once it has set, dab on some Vaseline or lip gloss to get the lacquered look. I like how this look looks like it’s created by the girl, not a makeup artist."
Helmut Lang: Pop Your Eye Color
"This look can seem a bit harsh, but it’s also very simple to make it an everyday pretty and wearable look. Keep skin luminous and sheer with a tinted moisturizer with some glow in it (try Pixi Illuminating Tint & Conceal) and even out any darkness under the eye. Apply a rich burgundy/copper eye shade (try Pixi Mesmerizing Mineral Palette in Copper Peach) with a fluffy brush from lashes to crease and blend well. You can do it very sheer and natural or build the color for more intensity. If you have blue eyes, this will REALLY make your eye color stand out. Add a hint of translucent bronze gel (try Pixi Cheek Sheen in Touch of Tan) on cheeks, and minimize any redness on the lips by applying some of the tinted moisturizer on the lips as well. I really like this minimal look – it feels sporty and modern."
