We Tried It: Dry Shampoo Foam

If you follow the Instafamous hairstylist Jen Atkin on Instagram, you’ve most likely seen and heard plenty about her newest offering: Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam. Yes, that’s right. These days, simple dry shampoo sprays and powders are considered passé. If you really don’t want to wash your hair for five days, you need to start using dry shampoo foam.

We know what you’re thinking: this must be a gimmick to get people to drop their favorite dry shampoos spray and spend $28 on a new formulation. But there are a few good reasons you might want to give dry shampoo foam a try.

It’s fun to use.

If you’re an avid dry shampoo user like us, spraying the stuff into your hair every day has become a monotonous routine. And the whole “waiting 30 seconds for the shampoo to sink into your roots” can actually feel like forever. With this foam, you don’t have to wait at all. You spray a bunch of it into the palm of your hand, scrunch it around your roots and bam! Your hair is dry and oil-free in an instant. Plus, it’s super fun to use. At first, you’ll be freaked out by putting a wet foam into your dry hair, but (thanks to a high alcohol content) you’ll soon see how quickly it absorbs into your hair.

It smells so good.

If you’ve already been using some of the Ouai products, you know they have a very strong floral scent. Depending on how much you like that (and we love it), the dry shampoo foam will either be your favorite thing or least favorite thing. If you’re into floral, you’ll be happy because the scent lingers for a couple days after you use it.

It’s a volume game changer.

Most dry shampoo loyalists use the product to sop up greasiness, but there’s also a secondary benefit: dry shampoo amps up lackluster third-day hair. We’re happy to report that the Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam offers volume unlike any other dry shampoo we’ve tried. We suggest applying some on the bottom area of your scalp to really boost your hair. It’s almost as good as blowing out your hair yourself.

There is one caveat. Sure, the dry shampoo foam is great at providing amazing volume and that “fresh hair feeling,” but that’s also due to the serious amount of alcohol in the product. This much alcohol means it’s extremely drying and that isn’t a good thing for a lot of hair types. If you already have super dry or color-treated hair, we suggest sticking with your favorite dry shampoo spray. But if you usually need something every day to soak up sweat and grime, dry shampoo foam just might be your savior.
