Pomegranate Is the Superfood Skin Care Ingredient That Does It All

Everyone (doctors, wellness devotees, parents) is always saying we need more fruits and vegetables. They’re typically referring to our diets. Given the number of fruit- and veggie-filled skin care products, one could think they’re talking about beauty routines, too. Watermelon and avocado are the latest buzzy skin care ingredients. But one reliable fruit that deserves all the praise is pomegranate.

Pomegranate extract can be used as a skin nutrient or an exfoliant, says Karen Asquith, national director of education at G.M. Collin. The ingredient is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids, vitamin C, catechins and flavonoids. Because of its composition, it’s able to help fight inflammation, hydrate skin, treat acne and dark spots. Not to mention brighten complexions and help delay the signs of aging, adds Dr. Mike Wong, executive vice president of research and development at EOS.

The antioxidants in the fruit are photoprotective, meaning they help prevent sun damage, explains board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joyce Imahiyerobo-Ip. Another plus is that it’s suitable for all skin types. It’s extremely gentle when the enzyme is used for exfoliating. So it’s OK for those with sensitive skin, Asquith says. That’s why it can be found in cleansers, toners, exfoliants, masks, moisturizers and serums.

The best way to discover the power of pomegranate is to try it. These pomegranate beauty products will help everyone increase their recommended daily skin care serving of fruit.
