Get the Look: Eyes that Pop

The key to unforgettable eyes are lush look-at-me lashes. These can be achieved by applying false lashes, or by enhancing them the right mascara. Applying a lengthening and thickening mascara is key – Christian Dior DiorShow Mascara (1) is a perennial favorite. For some extra punch, add in a few swipes of a colored mascara to bring out the color of your eyes. If, however, your intention is to get thick straight (versus thick curly) lashes, be sure to opt for wands with a lot of fibers, like Lotsa Lash Fiber Mascara from LORAC (2).

No matter the wand you opt to use, don’t forget to condition lashes beforehand to protect them from breakage and to make sure the mascara applies smoothly without any clumps. Also, apply mascara to the undersides as well as the tops of your lashes in a “wiggling fashion” versus straight up and down. Lastly, target hard-to-reach lashes with a specially designed petite wand like Bottom Lash Mascara from Clinique (3) or Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Mascara (4).

For those looking to go the extra mile (and are afraid of Latisse’s side effects), try a lash enhancer like Obagi ELASTILash Eyelash Solution (5) or simply curl your lashes. If opting for the latter, remember to only curl before applying mascara. Curling after mascara application will cause your curler to stick to lashes – a surefire way to cause lost lashes. If you must curl after mascara application, opt for a curler that has been designed with this in mind, like ModelCo Turbo LashWand (6).

While lashes are often the key to getting eyes that pop, eye shadow and liner can greatly impact the overall effect. When choosing shadow shades, make sure to not overpower your eyes with something excessively heavy. Instead, keep the application light and go for a brightening shade like one of those in Ellis Faas’ Eye Lights (7) collection. Similarly, too much liner – especially on the bottom – can make eyes appear small and tired.

No matter how you go about achieving this look, protecting your eyes with the proper conditioning treatments and makeup removers will be the key to ensuring long lasting, beautiful eyes.
