Beauty Trend: The ‘Lob’

Hair trends often go ignored because of the great commitment involved. The reason people get so attached to their hair, more specifically the cut, is the recovery time. With a trendy hair color or treatment, a quick visit to the salon or drugstore can fix the blonde that went brassy or copper that was too orange, but there are few things inside the affordable realm of beauty treatments that could fix a poorly executed undercut or pixie crop. Luckily, one of this year’s most prevalent hair trends requires less adventure than most; the “lob”, or long bob, is an unfortunately named but chic cut that falls just below the chin, around the shoulders.

Anne Hathaway’s lob is sleek while Olivia Palermo’s has movement.

Often categorized as that awkward stage between bob and mid-length hair, the lob has popped up on everyone from Anne Hathaway to Gwyneth Paltrow. The greatest quality of the lob is its versatility. Often the hair is long enough to be pinned back into a loose updo but it carries the same allure as a more classic bob, so often associated with deco revivalists and soccer moms. Despite the cut’s classical roots, don’t be concerned that it must be straight and blunt. An asymmetric blunt lob is beautiful but with the right cut, and the right layers, it is also the perfect base for soft waves or texture.

Jessica Alba and January Jones opt for textured lobs.
