See where you may be going wrong with these commonly misused products or tools.

A beauty routine is often inherited. Young women see their mothers or sisters applying makeup and learn the practices they use for the rest of their lives. Whether you'll admit it or not, some part of your routine has been influenced by a friend or relative that might not know what they're doing. Whether you're applying highlighter to your blemishes or damaging your lashes, see where you may be going wrong with five of the most commonly misused products:

  • Highlighting Concealer Pens

While many have concealing properties, highlighting pens are most often misused in place of a creamy concealer. Products like YSL’s cult Touche Eclat are often wrongly used to cover blemishes and redness when actually they are drawing attention to the area. This type of product is perfect for under eye circles but, as anyone who's been photographed wearing Touche Eclat knows, they can be very reflective.

YSL Touche Ecat Radiant Touch $40

Givenchy Mister Light Instant Light Corrective Pen $33

  • Spot Treatments

If you’re not used to having acne, a simple blemish can cause panic that leads to picking and a dramatic misuse of products. Spot treatments aren’t meant for longterm use and definitely are not meant to be put all over the face. Many women with very few problem areas use acne cleansers or spot treatments as a preventative measure which can cause excessive dryness and thinning of the skin. This is really a case where you should use as advised.

Origins Super Spot Remover Acne Treatment Gel $13.50

  • Eyelash Curlers

Not all eyelash curlers are the same. If you use the wrong shape or apply too much pressure you can damage your lashes which can eventually lead to them falling out. Short bursts of pressure are much better than one big squeeze. When buying a curler, look carefully at the shape of your eye and the shape of the curler. Just because a specific brand is popular doesn’t mean it’s right for you.

    Tweezerman ProCurl Eyelash Curler $20

    Shiseido Eyelash Curler $19

  • Foundation

Many women misunderstand the purpose of foundation. It’s not there to give you a tan or cover your acne, it’s there to even tone. If you have acne, it can be a great first step to getting full coverage, but where most women go wrong is by using more than they need. Most women can get away with using a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer because their skin texture is naturally good (yes, even those with acne). Don’t underestimate the power of concealer, you may be able to get away with less makeup than you think.

    NARS Sheer Glow Foundation $42

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 $42

  • Contour

Contouring can make or break your look, especially if you have a baby face or a fuller cheek, but applying the product wrong, or in the wrong color, can be glaringly obvious (see: Lindsay Lohan). Work with a shade that complements your skin tone; for some this could be a matte bronzer or for others it could be a taupe blush. Work with a very light hand and you can avoid embarrassment.
