The Can’t-Believe-It Beauty Benefits of Going Raw

When an Organic Avenue takes over a 5,000 square foot former Ferragamo store, you know that raw juices are no longer niche. The brand recently unveiled their pop-up at 3 W. 57th Street, and with it launched with a whole slew of new juices, cleanses, and snacks. Among the offerings, the most notable is Hydration Libation, which includes juices to add to your daily food intake in order to increase hydration (crucial especially for those who workout outdoors). Included in the bundle are three coconut waters, three cucumber juices, and one aloe shot. Of course we’ve all heard about the benefits of juicing — and whether or not we go the liquid route, we all know how important it is to get our daily fruit and veggie fix — but what exactly can these juices and raw snacks do to positively impact our skin health?

“All veggies are loaded with healing properties, so juicing is a great way to get a boost of nutrition without using pills or potions,” says Organic Avenue founder Denise Mari. “You’ll get nutrients that assimilate quickly, so there is no energy-draining digestion. You get all the health benefits you can imagine — clear eyes, skin, improved energy, balanced blood sugar, a body with nutrients to build healthy blood and more alkalizing minerals, a chance to give the body time to heal and reboot. There are just so many benefits.” Here’s a look at just a handful of those benefits:

  • Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, which help protect the skin from impurities (particularly leafy greens, blueberries, and fruit with yellow/orange skin).

  • Raw foods are free of refined sugars, which are often thought to cause acne.

  • Because the fruits and vegetables in juices are in their raw nature (versus cooked), there’s no risk of having killed live enzymes and nutrients that our bodies need, meaning we’re getting the highest quantity of healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and the other nutrients which are crucial for beautiful skin and energy.
  • Essential fatty acids, such as those found in raw foods, are often used to treat acne and eczema because they help lubricate skin and tissues, and act as a moisture barrier for skin to prevent dryness (especially important considering how dehydrating most acne products are).

  • Many studies have shown that Vitamin C can reduce sun-induced free radical damage. Free radicals break down collagen and elastin causing premature skin aging so load-up on oranges, strawberries, melon, grapefruit, etc. to keep skin healthy.

  • Zinc, found in high quantities in pumpkin and squash, protects the skin from damaging free radicals.

  • Vitamin A, found in high quantities in orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, including bell peppers, carrots, and cantaloupes, has been shown to reduce sebum production and the buildup of oil on the skin. Load up, especially if you’re acne-prone.

  • Calcium is the most prevalent mineral in our bodies and a deficiency has been shown to cause dry skin and wrinkles. Load up with kale, tomatoes, and oranges.

  • Vitamin K, found in high quantities in dark leafy vegetables, can help clot blood before it creates puffy, dark circles under eyes.

  • Vitamin E, found in high quantities in spinach, brocoli, and tomatoes, is an antioxidant that can protect your skin from UV damage, and fight free radical damage.
