Say What! Wearing Hoodies Might Become Illegal…?

Republican Senator Don Barrington from Oklahoma is on a mission: He’s coming after your hoodies. The third-term senator has brought forth an amendment known as Senate Bill 13 that, if passed, would ban clothing in Oklahoma that “conceals the identity of the wearer during the commission of a crime or for the purpose of coercion, intimidation or harassment” and clothing that would “intentionally conceal his or her identity in a public place by means of a robe, mask, or other disguise.” This includes hoodies worn with the hood covering your head. Halloween, parades, masquerade parties and masks or disguises worn for religious or educational purposes are exemptions.

The original law in which Senate Bill 13 would amend was originally created in the 1920s to combat crimes conducted by the Klu Klux Klan. But opponents of the new amendment are slamming the senator for racial profiling. He doesn’t see it that way. According to Senator Barrington via SB13, this is “immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety” and that “an emergency is hereby declared to exist.”

CNN legal analyst Sunny Hostin made headlines when she addressed this same issue in March during a debate on the network after an Indiana mall banned hoodies, claiming that this was akin to “stop and frisk.” Anchor Chris Cuomo acted as Hostin’s sparring partner. Here’s the hoodie argument, in a nutshell.
