It is not a good day for two mass retailers in California, as reports of lawsuits against J.Crew and Abercrombie & Fitch are coming to light. According to The Fashion Law, an employee at one of J.Crew’s Los Angeles locations has filed suit against the company for neglecting to pay him overtime hours, and a manager at a Hollister in Northern California is taking action against Abercrombie for similar reasons.
The plaintiff, Andrew Duberry, says that not only did J.Crew fail to give him his due money, but it doesn’t properly pay other employees for meal breaks and overtime. The suit maintains that J.Crew “engaged in a uniform policy and systematic scheme of wage abuse against their hourly paid or nonexempt employees within the State of California and the policy of denying wages for off-the-clock work and missed meal breaks means that store employees were often not paid minimum wage.” Furthermore, employees cannot get their hands on their payroll documents, which would help make their payment practices clearer. These practices break the California labor code, and Duberry is looking to be compensated accordingly. (more…)
Being a beauty junkie is about to become an even better feel-good activity. New prestige beauty website Beautykind is set to launch Monday to help spread some good karma around, just in time for some pre-holiday shopping. Founders Hil Davis and Gina Kohler are giving consumers the chance to donate five percent of every purchase to a cause of their choice — and if the cause is not listed, they can let the website know and Beautykind will do its best to make sure it happens.
“It’s the power of aggregation, from $5 to $10 at a time, that really makes this powerful,” said Davis in a statement to WWD. “We’ll have 10,000 causes at first, but within the next three months, we’ll have over 1.1 million.”
The company, which has adopted a similar philanthropic philosophy to fashion brands Warby Parker and Toms, will carry 50 to 60 brands, including GlamGlow, Nest Fragrances and Erno Lazlo. The guilt-free shopping experience will be a way to not only look good, but do good and feel good. Good all around.

Make Up For Ever is adding to the buzz leading up to the release of the highly anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey film with a limited-edition makeup line inspired by the book. The bestseller novel turned movie starring Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele is not coming out until February 13, but shoppers will be able to score the sultry line of cosmetics on December 26.
The collection will include provocatively-named products like the Tease Me Lip Trios, which include a lip liner, a highly pigmented lip gloss and a lighter textured gloss in Innocent and Passionate, retailing for $32. The Desire Me blush trio set will be priced at $49 and come packaged in a velvet bag with a key, and tied with a rope. The last piece of the collection will come in a keepsake box with a hidden compartment and be called Give Into Me. The largest set in the collection, it will retail for $79 and include a lip gloss, lipstick, eyeliner and an eyeshadow quad.
Be on the look out for ads, which are slated to run in the January issue of Cosmopolitan (which comes out early December). Make Up For Ever’s Fifty Shades collection will be exclusive to Sephora and sephora.com.
Eek! In the Cover Rumor Thread we had our hearts set on Gemma Ward fronting the next issue of Vogue Italia. Oh well, I guess we can’t complain about another appearance from Carolyn Murphy, who always delivers the goods. Vogue Italia‘s November cover surfaced earlier today and it stars the American model photographed by Steven Meisel. Murphy poses wearing Miu Miu with her hand on her head, suggesting she’s had enough of the holiday spirit — already!

“It’s a good cover! I love the star sequins that are scattered and placed on her arm, and the lighting is beautiful too,” agreed IsabelMarantBoy.
Also to admire Carolyn’s latest work is Ortemis who simply wrote the word “captivating” inside the thread.
Srdjan seems impressed too and posts, “I never buy Italian Vogue, but I might get it this time! I love Carolyn and this is definitely alluring! It has Vogue Italia edginess but not too much, just the way I like it.”
Yet not everyone’s on board. “Holiday Allure? What exactly displays this feeling here? she looks dead!!! One of these dead by strangulation cases… eyes open… mouth slightly open… seriously! I like Carolyn’s work in general but not this… in essence, I don’t dislike the image but it simply doesn’t work in conjunction with ‘Holiday Allure’? VI is the most pretentious magazine at the moment! Their concepts almost never translate into their imagery…” comments a very disappointed KissMiss.

Over the years, fashion people have gotten a bad rep for being picky eaters. Or, more accurately, for not eating anything at all, except maybe macarons and prosecco. But the fact of the matter is, a fashion girl’s gotta eat to survive, especially during Fashion Week. Jumping from show to show on an empty stomach is not an ideal situation for anyone — all work and no food can make for a very hangry fashion person. Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz, thankfully, has a remedy for that.
“We realise that when people are too hungry, they are really nasty,” he told the Telegraph in a profile published today. “Especially those ladies who do all these shows during the day, and they eat nothing because they want to look skinnier than the models,” he said, throwing just the slightest amount of shade. “The models are 18 and the other ones are no longer 18, so those starvation days to look like those other girls don’t work. We give them a drink and something to eat and a forgiving light, so everybody feels comfortable.”
Hah! So that’s how Elbaz avoided a full-on riot when Kimye was over 40 minutes late to his Spring 2015 show last month.

Keira also can be found posing for a series of images to accompany the cover, donning a range of dresses from Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen. “WOW, amazing editorial,” compliments a satisfied GIVENCHYlover.
Fluxx shares their enthusiasm and writes, “She photographs like a dream! Amazing editorial and cover.”
“Oh that’s gorgeous! Keira always looks beautiful and this is no exception. Love the romantic mood of the photos as well,” writes orchidee.
