Bottega Veneta Taps Julia Nobis for Knot Fragrance Ad Campaign (Forum Buzz)

Bottega Veneta released a new fragrance and the advertising campaign has just hit our forums. The fragrance entitled Knot is described as a seductive and stylish scent inspired by the Italian Riviera. The brand tapped Australian beauty Julia Nobis to front the fragrance, which hits stores this month. Photographed by David Armstrong wearing a classic black dress with her blond tresses styled in sophisticated, loose waves, Julia also stars in the commercial directed by Axel Lindahl.

Members of our forums have mixed reactions about the campaign. “Wow, Julia looks particularly awful here, the styling makes her look aged beyond her years,” commented HeatherAnne, clearly not an admirer of the campaign’s direction.

“So lifeless. That look might work for runways but she should turn it up a bit for a fragrance campaign,” criticized CharlottefromCA.

MyNameIs wasn’t a fan, either and posted, “That image is totally wrong for a perfume ad. It looks so random and unremarkable. Almost like a backstage picture. Julia looks good in the commercial, but not in the picture. They should’ve stuck with the same styling as they had in the commercial.”

“I love the dress and overall design but Julia looks off, the hair for sure looks awful to me but also the sad look on her eyes, maybe?” asked kokobombon.

Benn98 responded: “The dress really is the only redeeming feature of this campaign. I think they must’ve aimed for subtle sensuality as one can see that was achieved in the video, but the shoot doesn’t reflect that at all. It just looks dour. Glad the platinum hair is gone.”

GIVENCHYlover‘s positive comment stood out from the rest: “Sophisticated and delicate. Very Bottega.”

SELF Magazine Gets a Chic Update with the Help of Joan Smalls (Forum Buzz)

SELF magazine looks like it’s undergone a major makeover. The publication’s got a new editor-in-chief, Joyce Chang, and she’s pulling out the big guns for her very first issue. This month, Vogue cover girl Joan Smalls fronts the new issue and can we just say, chick looks amazing?

Joan looks serene, her limbs gracefully zigzagging down the cover. For the shoot, the magazine tapped Patrick Demarchelier, and we can expect to see the work of more top-tier photographers under the new leadership. This is a new era for the magazine, and it’s safe to say it’s off to a great start.

SELF‘s new look didn’t get past our forum members. “Don’t tell me this is SELF, the servicey US health and beauty magazine? Wow! This is great for them! They must’ve had a re-vamp,” Benn98 wrote.

So the Vogue cover girls are really taking over the Condé titles this month,” proclaimed A.D.C.

Some people weren’t too keen on the gray background. “It would have been an awesome cover if it wasn’t for the weird skin colour they gave her and the lack of life in her eyes,” Urban Stylin opined. 

Thrilled to see the model gracing another cover was orchidee, “And the Joan takeover continues!” Still, he had his criticisms: “Her body looks SO good, but she looks a little dead in the eyes. The grey tones in the lighting aren’t helping either. Happy for her though.”

“Flawless,” valliaddict simply stated.

This Bride Made Her Own Wedding Dress (for Just $30) During Her Daily Commute

You’ve got to give credit when it’s due, and there is probably no one more deserving than this modern hero, a Reddit user that goes by the name alkikat. Like most brides, she was on the hunt for the perfect wedding dress, but instead of shilling out thousands of dollars for a frock, she took matters into her own hands and made the dress herself. 

The whole dress took her about five months to complete, so where did she get the time in her busy schedule to put together her dream dress? Oh, just on her daily commute. Armed with just a crochet needle and yarn, alkikat made her dress by hand using a pineapple stitch. “The dress was practically free because I didn’t spend much money on it (under $30 for all of the materials including fabric for the lining) and I didn’t spend much extra time on it,” she says. “My commute time couldn’t be used for anything else anyway.”

Oh, and the best part about the dress? No dry cleaning necessary. Plus, she says she intends to wear it more than once (Keira Knightley style), in several different ways.

Pharrell Williams Designed a Train-Themed Collection with Moynat

Pharrell Williams is steadily storming the fashion industry, adding yet another stylish venture to an already impressive list of projects. Moncler, G-Star RAW, Comme des Garçons and Adidas have all lined up to work with the fashionable musician, who seems to be eager to pile more onto his plate. This time, Pharrell is bringing his quirky sensibilities to French leather goods label Moynat with a collection inspired by trains.

And by “inspired” we mean “heavily influenced” and “quite literally ran with the theme.” Images of trains cover everything from a small leather pouch to a silk scarf decorated with an old-timey drawing of a locomotive. According to WWD, the limited-edition range boasts resin bags that actually look like trains — smokestack and all. The bags will set you back around $12,830. When you consider that they’re made from seal trunks and ebony wood (that one is cheaper, ringing in at $4,105), the price doesn’t sound so shocking.  (more…)

Fashion People (and Just About Everyone Else) Loved Emma Watson’s #HeForShe UN Speech

This weekend, Emma Watson made a speech at the U.N.’s #HeForShe campaign event, encouraging men to join the crusade and support feminism by fighting alongside women for equal rights. In her speech, she put it to men to consider gender inequality as a problem not just affecting women, but men as well.

“I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society,” she said. “I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it would make them less of a man. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either. We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes, but I can see that they are. And that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence. If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted, women won’t feel compelled to be submissive. If men don’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled.”

Her speech sent shock waves around the Internet. Though the idea that the patriarchy also oppresses men is a basic tenant of modern feminism, hearing it from an actress certainly made an impression on people, including members of the fashion set. The aftermath of the speech was met with tons of fawning and praise toward Ms. Watson, whose talk was described by Vanity Fair as “game-changing.”

Mario Testino Photographs Miranda Kerr for Vogue Japan’s Anniversary Issue (Forum Buzz)

The month of November marks a special occasion for Vogue Japan as the publication celebrates its 15th anniversary. The magazine tapped Miranda Kerr for the cover and commissioned Mario Testino to shoot a large portfolio featuring the Aussie model for a geisha-inspired shoot. The transformation of Miranda isn’t the only thing different as Vogue Japan’s signature white background is absent in favor of a blue/gray backdrop, taking the cover down a different route for the magazine’s celebratory issue.

Vogue Japan’s efforts apparently haven’t paid off, though. “I miss the white background. This looks like a diff magazine all over which isn’t that good,” noted MON, clearly not a fan of the dramatic change.

“Is there any chance this is a preview, not a real cover? Vogue Japan is not Vogue Japan without the white backdrop,” exclaimed Srdjan.

“Such a disaster. I wouldn’t blame Testino for it. It’s Kerr and the styling, which doesn’t fit her at all, that cause an eyesore,” added an underwhelmed Kanna.

GivenchyHomme shared the same sentiments and commented, “This looks like a cheap generic magazine. Everything is horrible, especially the model.”

Also not fond of the cover is blueorchid: “I always roll my eyes and think people are being overly-dramatic when they say this, but… this is one of the worst covers I have ever seen.”

“As cliche as it is, I can get past the geisha theme—barely. I think Gemma Ward would have been a much better fit. But either way, if they were going to do this kind of theme, they could have used a model who is actually Japanese,” suggested orchidee.
