You Can Aid Refugees AND Own a Piece of Fashion History by Buying Kate Moss’ DIY Denim

This June, cast members from HBO’s Game of Thrones teamed up with the International Rescue Committee to raise awareness of the Syrian refugee crisis and hopefully put pressure on European Union leaders to do more to aid those languishing in camps. Lena Headey, Maisie Williams and Liam Cunningham traveled to Lesbos to visit the displaced Syrians and share their stories. Now, more world-famous faces are lending their clout — or, more specifically, their jeans — to the cause.

Rumor Has It Adidas and Alexander Wang Are Collaborating

Alexander Wang wraps his Fall 2016 runway show.

Kanye West, we’re going to let you finish, but we have a feeling Alexander Wang is about to have one of the best Adidas collaborations of all time. Rumor has it the athleticwear giant has tapped the sporty, streetwear conscious designer for its latest collaboration, though neither Adidas’ nor Wang’s spokespeople will confirm.

If WWD’s sources are accurate (and they usually are) full details of the project will be available to the public after Wang’s upcoming New York Fashion Week show (slated for 9 p.m. on September 10). A party to commemorate both the collaboration and the designer’s Spring 2017 collection will purportedly follow the runway show.

If the reports prove true, Wang will be joining the ranks of fashion greats like Stella McCartney, Raf Simons, Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto and Kanye West, whose ongoing partnerships with Adidas have played a significant role in putting the brand back on the fashion world’s map.

That said, as of 2015, Nike still owned a staggering 48 percent of the U.S. footwear market, Adidas a mere 9 percent. While the sportswear manufacturer certainly has a long way to go if it wants to compete with Nike, this collaboration with Wang, along with the expansion of its Yeezy line and its continual reissuing of timeless classics, bodes very well for the brand. Joan Smalls Captivates on the Cover of CR Fashion Book’s Eighth Edition (Forum Buzz)

Gigi Hadid’s patriotic cover for CR Fashion Book‘s Spring 2016 edition was still pretty fresh in our minds until the magazine just unveiled the covers for its upcoming edition, which seem to knock it out of the park just as hard. Continuing their theme of multi-covers, the biannual publication serves up a trio of covers for us to choose from for Issue 8, featuring beauties Fernanda Ly and Joan Smalls. Mario Sorrenti came on board to lens the cover shoot and delivers captivating close-up images of the girls, who posed with a face full of makeup and glitter — and we’re loving one cover in particular.

As per usual, our forum members were quick to generate discussion. “I hope this is a preview cover. If not, then this is creepy. Glitters on her teeth? Really? Mario Sorrenti for CR?” MON quickly disapproved.

“Nothing new. Nothing Great,” said dcmaike of Fernanda’s cover which was the first to surface (above left).

But the whole dynamic changed when Joan’s cover came to light. “Oh my goodness, Joan’s cover is gorgeous. The seduction is beyond this planet,” raved a more than impressed MON, returning to the thread in awe. (more…)

“A month can’t go by without seeing a Hadid sister on a cover. It’s a quite empty cover, but Bella looks good. Also, it’s nice to see an Armani piece featured on a cover. Or maybe it happens often, I just haven’t noticed,” wrote dodencebt the second the cover dropped earlier today.

“Simply shocked to see an all black outfit on the cover of Vogue Japan. How refreshing. I like the pose, but if her expression was more powerful it would work better,” added Miss Dalloway. (more…)

This Male Makeup Artist Can Make Himself Look Exactly Like Any Game of Thrones Actress

Game of Thrones is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s the ultimate form of Sunday night escapism, an easy, spicy beach read and the inspiration for a collection of seriously badass chokers. Now, thanks to Filipino actor, TV host and scarily talented makeup artist Paolo Ballesteros (whom we’ve showcased before), the show is also blessed us with some of the most stunning makeup transformations we’ve ever seen.

While his 1.7 million and counting followers look on via Instagram, Ballesteros, who’s known for using his formidable skills to morph into celebrities, recreates Westeros’ leading ladies using his own face as the canvas. It’s an extended process. “I start out by Googling pictures of the characters in different lighting to see the facial structures and contours,” Ballesteros told Mashable. After that, it’s a simple matter of procuring a suitable wig, trimming it to mirror the character’s length, sketching the subject’s face onto his own using an eyebrow pencil, covering his eyebrows in gluestick, priming, highlighting and contouring his face, lining his eyes to appear either bigger or further apart, shaping the size of his nostrils and, last but not least, mastering the mouth.

“Most of the lips are the same shape,” Ballesteros explained. “But if they’re not, I’ll put black liner on the lower part of my upper lip to make it thinner and give that half-open mouth expression.”

Check out his spot-on impressions of Arya, Cersei, Sansa, Brienne, Daenerys, Margaery and Melisandre in the pictures below — and prepare for your withdrawal pangs to multiply. (more…)

Zara, River Island and More Are Under Fire for Allegedly Stealing From Indie Artists

UK retailer Bershka is among the brands under fire for allegedly stealing indie artists' designs.

It’s a widely accepted fact that fast fashion’s designers — how shall we put this — borrow liberally from the runway. However, injured parties like luxury brand Céline choose to look the other way (we suspect) because their well-to-do customer is not shopping at Zara or the like. That, or lax copyright laws make prosecuting time consuming and ineffective. However, when popular retailers blatantly lift designs from smaller fishes, i.e. indie designers, it triggers our sense of moral outrage.

At least a dozen indie artists have recently come forward with complaints that Zara, River Island, Bershka, Forever 21 and more copied their work without offering attribution or compensation. As mainstream clothing companies scramble to stay on top of the rising DIY movement and fulfill customers’ hunger for craft pins and patches, indie artists are getting trampled in the fray. However, Los Angeles-based illustrator Tuesday Bassen and Montreal-based Stay Home Club founder Olivia Mew aren’t shying away from the fight.

It being 2016, the Davids of the world have a very useful platform on which to stand and take on the Goliaths — social media. On Sunday, Mew took to Instagram to call out River Island after a U.K. fan pointed out the striking similarity between Mew’s work and a patch sold by the high street retailer. (more…)
