Olivier Rousteing was virtually unknown to the fashion world when it was announced in late April that he would be taking over as head designer for Balmain. With his anonymity came a lack of any sort of expectation as to what he would produce. So when he presented the resort collection for 2012, his first while at the helm of the brand, forum members were very pleasantly surprised.
“Finally we're seeing something new,” wrote AgrenateD. “I can't remember the last time Balmain experimented with prints, and even though this looks like a couple of designer prints mashed together it still is very pleasing to the eyes.”
Disco54 was also a fan: “Those skinny flares and those gorgeous transformer print style dresses are awesome!” she raved. “It looks like Pucci and Balenciaga had a love child,” she added. In this case that seems to be a good thing.
SylviaMR appreciated that this collection felt fresh coming from Balmain. “Finally a collection that isn't all about rock, glitter, sequins etc. I think it looks really good… the lines are very graphic and enhance the prints.”
Well played by Olivier Rousteing. The Fashion Spot’s forum members will be anxiously awaiting Balmain’s next collection now that our expectations have been raised.
