CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Joseph Altuzarra and retailer J.Crew seem like an odd pair for a collaboration collection, and it turns out they are. Fashionista provided a first look at the entire capsule collection, and other than the holes in the striped mariniere sweaters, Altuzarra’s design aesthetic seems entirely absent. The pieces look like run-of-the-mill J.Crew or Madewell fare.
“This is so bad, I don’t see the touch of Altuzarra’s hand. It reminds me of regular J.Crew… maybe even worse,” HeatherAnne complained.
Altuzarra cited “Brigitte Bardot in Saint-Tropez and French preppy style,” as his design inspiration, which forum members found to be played out. Scott noted, “[The collection] certainly doesn't seem to fit with his signature aesthetic and the Bardot reference is as equally unoriginal. Been done to death. I wish designers within this sort of context would seek out other icons maybe American shoppers wouldn't be so familiar with but would ultimately be delighted with.”
Items will be available for purchase on JCrew.com on April 19, and they’ll hit the racks of J.Crew’s Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan on April 23.
