Confirmed: Steven Meisel Out at Vogue Italia (Forum Buzz)

Our fears became reality yesterday as Vogue Italia‘s highly-anticipated June installment surfaced on our forums, which wasn’t photographed by Steven Meisel. Over the past week,  our forums have been speculating that the legendary photographer and longtime Vogue Italia collaborator did not shoot the June edition due to alleged creative differences. Franca Sozzani opted for a different route and delivered four unique covers captured by four different photographers for ‘The China Issue’ of the Italian title. Mario Sorrenti, Craig McDean, Steven Klein and Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott each shot a cover featuring a handful of Chinese beauties.

Forum members were as fast as lightning to generate discussion. “So disappointed, such a bad year for VI so far,” shared MDNA.

“It feels extremely weird that Meisel is no longer there and also sort of anti-climactic. It would be incredible if we got a final all Meisel issue featuring his favorite models. I don’t know, I just feel kinda sad if the rumours of his leaving are actually true and would hate to see Vogue Italia become just another edition of Vogue by losing its edge. However, as I understand it, nothing has been said officially so I’m still holding out hope,” added an optimistic Nepenthes.

KissMiss wasn’t impressed either, writing, “I am sorry but this looks a mess to me.”

Also left underwhelmed was blueorchid: “They all look like supplements. Yikes.”

“They all look like supplements. Geez. I’d prefer a simple portrait by Meisel over this try-hard multiple covers,” agreed quangthinh.

Feeling nostalgic was Miss Dalloway. “Have to say I secretly hoped the rumors were not true, and that he shot at least one of the covers. Makes me sad because I grew up, and came to love fashion through Meisel. No one can replace this combination for me. It marks a significant change for VI, and the fashion industry IMO.”
