Pippa in Kate's Engagement Dress Shocker!

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

The Duchess of Cambridge fever truly set in internationally upon the release of the official promotional material reporting her engagement to Prince William. If we cast our minds back, the first thing which we all probably recall is her stunning blue ISSA dress. Remember how so many fans wanted to emulate her style that the dress immediately sold out, and then, even the high street went crazy trying to produce similar inspired pieces for less? Then, at the end of last year, the dress was brought back to the forefront of our fashion consciousness when ISSA recreated five more of the previously discontinued dresses as part of online fashion week. If that wasn’t enough to render the dress as one of the most memorable in history, it’s also featured on the official Kate wax work at the infamous Madame Tussauds in London.

Pippa Middleton: Copy Cat

Bearing all of this in mind, why on earth Pippa Middleton, would you knowingly buy the same style ISSA dress to wear to your friend’s wedding? Admiring your sister’s style and borrowing her clothes is one thing, but actually going out and buying an almost identical version of such an infamous dress, knowing full well that you’re more than likely going to get photographed is, well, perhaps just a little too attention seeking. What will you be wearing next, her wedding dress?

Nevertheless, Pippa did look rather nice in the red version of the dress whilst at the wedding of her friend who she used to go to University with. She teamed it with the almost obligatory English wedding flowery fascinator, a clutch purse, and some black heels. Unfortunately for Pippa though, the outfit was missing that blinging zillion pound engagement rock which Kate cleverly matched to her version of the dress.

Kristen Stewart Covers Elle, Seems Pretty Cool in the Accompanying Interview

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Kristen Stewart for ElleThere are two good reasons to dislike Kristen Stewart: 1) Her acting in the Twilight franchise was worse than the movies were bad. 2) It's like she goes out of her way to look impossibly miserable at all times, particularly whenever she's dressed in one of the world's most beautiful gowns.

But sorry, kids: Stewart is probably not going anywhere. Even though Twilight has wrapped, the actress is on the red carpet circuit right now, promoting Snow White and the Huntsmen. She'll be back in your face shortly: her latest project, On the Road, is premiering at Cannes later this month and will be released in the US sometime afterward.

And so, of course, Elle mag decided to feature her on the cover of its June issue. A preview of the cover and spread are already available online, and even though the glossy did the best they could to bring a little life into Stewart's pictures (shout-out to that beaded Ralph Lauren dress on the cover!), she looks as dull and dour as ever.

But in a surprising twist, she actually seems — it's hard to say this — very awesome in the interview which accompanies the spread. The profile opens at a bookstore, with Stewart gushing about the novel Contempt by Alberto Moravia, a book I happen to be quite fond of. She goes on and on about her reading habits: she loves John Steinbeck (seemingly in a genuine way!), Martin Amis, Bukowski, Aleksander Hemon — she's so convincing as a true reader that I can't help but suspect that some genius publicist gave her cue cards.

I'm so worried this is all for show. Stewart seems too unconcerned about the reporter at her side: she drops the word "fuck" in every other sentence (at one point referring to Robert Pattinson as her "fucking boyfriend") and smokes Camels in her car, ashing in an empty Snapple bottle.

At one point, Stewart tells the reporter:

Because I didn’t go to fucking school, I feel I would have had a bit something extra if I had. Maybe because my life is so perfect, when I see the other side of life, it just seems like, almost like I want…You can learn so much from bad things. I feel boring. I feel like, Why is everything so easy for me?

I buy it. I buy her. I'm a Kristen Stewart convert. In real life, I would totally be friends with this girl.

Lady Gaga's Indonesian Concert Permit Was Denied

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

I've always been aggressively forthcoming about my disdain for both Terry Richardson and Lady Gaga. I think Richardson is a sleazy rodent and Gaga is an affected hack. (Of course, these two fine specimens of humanity are good friends.) So it's not too easy for me to admit that I've been following Terry's photo updates of Gaga's "Born This Way" Asian Concert Tour pretty religiously. (Self-flagellating by consuming vile cultural products is a hobby of mine: I sometimes pretty often watch Fox News.)

Richardson's been posting highlights of Lady Gaga's travels through South Korea, Hong Kong, and Tokyo on his photo blog, Terry's Diary. The pictures are pretty typical: a compassionate Saint Gaga comforting her weeping fans; the pop star making base, vulgar faces on camera; Terry clutching his subject's shoulder and sneering with self-satisfied delight; Lady Gaga decked out in one of her millions of meat dresses.

Even though the amount of fun they've been having isn't easy for me to bear, it made for good hate-browsing. So when I found out that Gaga's permit to perform in Indonesia had been denied, I wanted to feel schadenfreude-y, but I actually felt robbed.

Indonesia's political and religious leaders were up in arms over the pop star's upcoming concert, condeming Gaga's revealing outfits and suggestive performances. The intense and sustained opposition to the performer's scheduled June 3rd concert finally led authorities to deny Gaga's concert permit on the grounds that they wouldn't be able to ensure the security of the singer, her crew, and the attendees.

Mother Monster has yet to make a statement, but I'm guessing that she's cool with not getting trampled to death by a screaming mob.

Kate Middleton's Baby Plans

Monday, May 14, 2012

Despite the fact that Kate and Wills announced that they wouldn’t be trying for a royal baby until 2013 due to the fact that their schedule for 2012 is already jam packed with the Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee, Kate’s Mum has only gone and let slip to British Now magazine that the happy couple are actually planning to conceive sooner than initially planned. She confessed that the couple’s first year of marriage has been better than they could have ever imagined, and so, they are desperate to have a baby as soon as possible. So get ready to hear the patter of tiny royal feet very very soon! Kate was pictured earlier this year walking her puppy Lupo through Kensington Gardens, could it be this addition to the family that has got her feeling all the more broody?

More royal engagements

Baby plans aside, Kate has been busy with royal engagements over the weekend. Friday saw her attend the Olympic Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, which celebrates the British Olympians who are set to participate in this summer’s games. On Sunday, she cheered on William and Harry in a charity polo match at Coworth Park where she also had Lupo in tow, how cute!

What did she wear?

Now that you know what Kate got up to at the weekend, the resulting question upon your lips can only be, what did she wear? For the concert, she opted for yet another Jenny Packham number, in the form of a floor sweeping blue Spring 2012 dress with a Swarovski crystals embellished lace bodice (snagging our Look of the Day). It was also a refreshing change to see Kate’s hair in an up-do. That detailed bun must have taken quite a few hours to do!

Kate’s Polo match outfit

It’s not easy deciding what to wear to an awkward event such as a polo match, especially given our unreliable British weather, but Kate seemed to pick the perfect outfit for the occasion on Sunday. She wore a printed green Libélula silk Rebecca dress and teamed it with a pair of Stuart Weitzman cork wedges. Now that was one seriously chic polo match!

Kanye West Stopped By Kim Kardashian's L'Uomo Vogue Shoot

Monday, May 14, 2012

Kim Kardashian

L'Uomo Vogue made the questionable, but possibly lucrative, decision to photograph Kim Kardashian for the magazine's July/August issue. According to the reality star's Twitter, the shoot took place yesterday, after a Mother's Day brunch (what a day!).

Pulling, perhaps, some inspiration from the holiday, Rushka Bergman styled Kardashian in a mop top wig à la momager Kris Jenner. Francesco Carrozzini lensed the paparazzi-themed shoot. The preview shot teases a spread which is sure to be (like everything Kardashian's involved with) conceptually original and impeccably tasteful.

If L'Uomo Vogue didn't already seem like a fame-strivey sellout, Kanye West stopped by the set to make out with Kim. The shot was captured by the real-life paparazzi presumably milling about the perimeter. The high-profile subject is already drumming up tons of publicity for the upscale Italian fashion magazine, which is sure to generate notable sales on the newsstand in July. I have some sympathy for L'Uomo Vogue — money is money, and we all need to eat and buy expensive purses — but let's be clear about something: the last stop on the celebrity gravy train is hell.

Alexa Chung May Be Dating Agyness Deyn's Ex

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Alexa Chung Last Friday at Mulberry's Frieze Project Artists dinner at Crown in New York City, the very leggy and inscrutable Alexa Chung showed up with a never-before-seen date: Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.

The British "it" girl is a big big fan of dating the kinds of boys that have lots and lots of fans: rockers. (Ugh.) She does it all the time, probably because musicians make the best boyfriends if you're completely delusional.

Even though the maybe-couple went out of their way to minimize press, Page Six was not having it. The tabloid chatted up a guest at the party to deliver this important breaking news:

“Alexa and Albert arrived together and left together. They were adamant that they were not to be in any pictures together."

The Strokes boys have spent the past decade chasing girls around Lower Manhattan, to great effect. Hammond Jr.'s last public girlfriend? Agyness Deyn, who was then pretty much the superest supermodel in New York. I'm sure he treated her so well.

Alexa Chung's last public boyfriend? Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner.

Hammond Jr. and Chung might actually be a match made in heaven: they're both totally predictable.

Kanye West Hates Stuff

Monday, May 07, 2012

Kanye WestNext time you remember that you're an insignificant little speck in this chaotic, seemingly unfeeling universe, instead of getting bummed out, think about Kanye West. Not only does he consistently deliver the kind of inane jabber which is imminently mockable by even the slowest wit, the rapper-turned-designer is also a living reminder that no amount of fame or riches can soothe a tortured soul.

In addition to humiliating young women at major awards shows, comparing himself to Hitler, and running around New York City with the human pox better known as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West can't even look out the window as he drives down the street without being overwhelmed with contempt for the people he sees.

Luckily, the superstar maintains an ill-advised Twitter to document his thoughts. Last night, West was "just driving through the city" when he saw "a few things" he hated. Because he makes very bad choices, he decided to share his thoughts with his 7.3+ million Twitter followers.

Here's what got Kanye all riled up: "button up shirts with hoodies...hoodies with sport coats...sport coats with button up shirts, jeans and dress shoes...khaki trench coats with jeans and off brand work out sneakers...khaki cargo shorts...big ass striped scarves...long ass sideburns with the line up RnB beard."

Poor Kanye. So many horrors, so many crimes against humanity, and "all this in 5 blocks."

"Detest," Kanye Tweeted, accurately identifying one of his emotions.

"#I'm on my snob," he said, a few minutes later. No, Kanye: you aren't just a snob. You're a sad, petty little man. And that's cool or whatever — "no judgement!" — but stop broadcasting it.

Meet the Next Rihanna Hit Video, 'Where Have You Been?'

Monday, April 30, 2012

Rihanna's just released her latest video for the Calvin Harris-produced song "Where Have You Been?" Even though I have a soft spot for the pop star's bleaker ballads, like "Love the Way You Lie" or "California King Bed," "Where Have You Been?" is the kind of energetic, upbeat dance song sure to satisfy anyone impatiently waiting for summer to get here already.

Rihanna shows off her never-disppointing dance moves on a desert-scape, styled in haute-tribal finery: pink Aladdin pants, a 1,001 Arabian Nights headscarf, and elbow-length animal print gloves. The whole production is sexy, but like everything the pop star does, it has a little bit of bite: Rihanna isn't just idly looking for a lover, she's on the hunt. The opening and closing shots of the video show her creeping around a swamp, like a crocodile pursuing prey — or better yet, like a siren searching for someone to shipwreck.

Nicki Minaj's Itty Bitty Pink Bikini Stars in Her New Video

Friday, April 27, 2012

The same day we learned that producing neon nail polish is illegal in the US, Nicki Minaj released a new music video, Starships, in which she's styled entirely in neon. In a look which many of us will surely be imitating poolside this summer, Minaj pairs the world's tiniest neon pink bikini with neon green hair. Later in the video she "matches" strappy neon yellow sandles with a pink-and-white bandage bikini and violent purple hair. If you're anything like me, you'll be so busy looking at the neon, you won't remember to listen to the song.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Hold Hands at Chanel's Arts Festival

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

Kim Kardashian & Kanye WestIf you weren't invited to last night's Chanel-sponsored TriBeCa Film Festival Artists Program dinner honoring major art stars like Kara Walker and Cindy Sherman, you shouldn't worry about it: who would want to be part of any club which would have Kim Kardashian as a member?

In truth, the reality TV star and American princess crashed the party as famous fashion designer and Obama-certified "jackass" Kanye West's date. For those of you that don't go on the Internet, let me bring you up to speed on the subtext: Kim and Kanye are both publicity junkies who have been living out their adult lives jumping from one high-profile relationship to the next. Both stars prefer short-term flings — so short-term that even Kim Kardashian's most major romantic commitment, a marriage, lasted only 72 days.

Even though they haven't confirmed their relationship, Kim and Kanye have been running around New York City together and doing a very good job of drawing as much attention to themselves as possible.

Not only was Kim photographed leaving Kanye's apartment and dining with him at night, but she also set out in public wearing the letters "KW" as earrings. In short, they're behaving exactly like any other couple in love, if getting special-order accessories with your new sweetheart's initials and flaunting them in front of the paparazzi is how you choose to honor a new relationship.

Unrelated: Kim has just signed a $40 million contract with E! to extend Keeping Up With the Kardashians for another three years.
