The Sex & the City Prequel is Happening

So I’m wary of saying what I’m about to say, but it must be said: the CW has ordered a season of the Sex & the City prequel, and I’m looking forward to it. Even though it wouldn’t hurt anyone for SATC to rest in peace, and even though the Carrie Bradshaw backstory seems like a doomed concept (getting any kind of pleasure from the series relies on a willful suspension of disbelief. To care about Carrie, you have to pretend that family, friends, and money all function according to the rules of an alternate universe), a half-hour revival of the series, a temporary break from the SATC feature-lengths, seems tempting. The CW is the contemporary Queen Bee of addictive, glossy dramadies: a few years back, the network picked up Gossip Girl to fill the hole SATC burned into our collective hearts upon its departure. The prequel plot-lines are sure to be soapy, as the CW will surely work hard to jam SATC into its GG mold, and even though the product might be vile, it sure does sound like it’ll be fun to watch.

Rumors of the prequel have been floating around since last February. Elizabeth Olsen had reportedly signed on to star as Carrie Bradshaw, with Blake Lively playing Samantha, Selena Gomez as Charlotte, and Emma Roberts as Miranda. It seems unlikely that Olsen would sign on for a part in the TV show version, but I’m willing to be surprised.
