Kim Kardashian Wore the Midriff-Baring Pucci Last Seen on Gwyneth Paltrow

Thursday, May 24, 2012

I'm not saying that Kim Kardashian didn't look great in the same midriff-baring Spring 2012 Emilio Pucci dress Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 2011 Emmy Awards — she did! The reality star has really stepped up her style ever since she started dating the fashion-conscious Kanye West. Last night at Cannes was no different: Kardashian looked glamorous, sexy, and even tasteful. And it's a treat to see how well the garment works on the two very different women: Kardashian and Paltrow don't just have dissimilar figures, they're also polar opposites in terms of public persona.

But Paltrow's Emmy look was one of the most talked about red carpet moments of the past year — did Kardashian really not know she was copy-catting? There are millions of other beautiful dresses in the world (even some from the same Pucci collection!) and if you're going to be one of the most-photographed women in the world, you could at least try to wear something less recognizable.

Style.com to Broadcast the CFDA Awards in All Their Glory

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Anna Wintour CFDAFollowing on the heels of Vogue.com's successful livestream of the Met Gala earlier this month, another Conde Nast web property, Style.com, is gearing up to broadcast this year's CFDA Awards.

WWD reports that Style.com staffers will be documenting the June 4 ceremony via social media as it happens, but the broadcast itself won't be available online until the following day. The two-pronged approach seems designed to draw attention to the full spectrum of Style.com's online presence.

The broadcast will combine red carpet entrances (contributing editor Tim Blanks will appear carpet-side on the site's behalf), interviews, and "other exclusives."
I'm guessing that Style.com will mix in plenty of documentary footage from past awards: the website recently got access to the CFDA Awards' archives, and has been running highlights in anticipation of this year's ceremony.

An Update on Model Spawn

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Sasha PivovarovaSorry about calling them "spawn." I was just trying to get your attention. "Progeny" seemed staid; "heaven-sent bundles of hope and joy" doesn't really work in a headline.

Anyway, today we got some news updates concerning the procreative statuses of two of the world's top supermodels, Sasha Pivovarova and Gisele Bundchen.

First order of business: IMG Models posted the photo on the right to their Facebook page. That's Sasha P. holding her newborn infant, just over a week old and already a better smizer than anyone that's ever stepped foot on an America's Next Top Model set. The Moscow-born model chose to name her beam of baby bliss Mia Isis, weirdly. You know how unnatural it seems when a French person says "McDonalds?" It's the same thing with "Isis" in Russian — no rolling-off-the-tongue happening with that name.

Second item: megamodel Gisele Bundchen may or may not be pregnant with her second tender babe. According to the Brazilian magazine Época, the model shared the news with Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci (he dressed her for the Met Gala). On the other hand, her spokesperson refused to comment on the rumors and — more importantly — baby bump aficionados haven't observed any noticeable changes to her figure.

I'm watching developments closely, so stay tuned for updates.

Terry Richardson Shoots Lindsey Wixson's Make-Out Session

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Oy vey Lindsey Wixson. If I could give young women all across the world one piece of advice, it would probably be: stop worrying so much about what other people think of you. But if I could give a second piece of advice, it would definitely be: don't make-out in front of Terry Richardson.

Your favorite creeper dropped what he was doing (stalking Lady Gaga across Asia) to photograph the young model making out with a mysterious boy named "Connor" in a park at night. It's fa-fa-fa-FASHION because Wixson's wearing an entire tube's worth of red lipstick, which she edgily smears across her admirer's face. It's pretty gross. If you've ever wondered why they call it "eating face" look no further.

So, who's the lucky so-and-so that gets to make-out with a supermodel? One Mr. Connor Lang has been Tweeting plenty of screenshots showing off video chats with his make-out buddy. The face in the Terry pictures matches the ones in the screenshots, and Wixon's been retweeting some of his posts.

Tumblr user conostumlyyr has also put up a few photos of the model, eating gelato and looking pretty in Milan. One of the tags on these items reads "Connor Lang photography."

So Connor Lang appears to be an aspiring photographer and maybe even filmmaker living in New York. How does Wixson know him? Like Richardson, I'm a little bit of a creeper: according to Facebook, Lang's family lives in Wichita, Kansas, the model's hometown. Were they high school sweethearts? Each other's boy/girl-next-door? Getting to imagine their shared past makes this photo series, which would otherwise be really disturbing, kind of sweet.

Still, maybe there are better places to make-out than in front of Richardson's camera lens.

Tyra Wants You to Vote for ANTM's Cycle 19 Contestants

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

There are big changes afoot at America's Next Top Model. Show creator and host Tyra Banks fired Nigel Barker and the Jays, staple personalities of the long-running reality modeling competion, and hired two ANTM newbies, male model Rob Evans and celebrity stylist Johnny Wujek, for Cycle 19.

And there's yet another twist: viewers get to vote on eliminations, because Banks is determined to make sure that ANTM resembles the modeling industry as little as possible.

Voting for Cycle 19, the "College Edition" (because Tyra can't miss a chance to mention her nine-week stint at Harvard Business School), is already underway. Over on Facebook, the former supermodel is begging you to help her narrow down the 30 finalists to 13 girls that'll get a spot in the ANTM "Sorority House." (Typing "Sorority House" almost made me throw up in my mouth.) I'm kind of glad that Tyra's finally on to her own utter lack of judgement.

Each one of the thirty finalists is pursuing some sort of post-secondary education: hopefuls were plucked from 4-year colleges, community colleges, divinity school, law school, beauty school. This ensures that the show will consist entirely of women who are too old to have a shot at a modeling career. Genius.

To bring these serious-minded college girls down a few notches, Tyra Banks styled them in tiny bikini bottoms, tacky cropped tops, and clunky, cheap-looking stilettos. All the models look cold and uncomfortable. This could be a promotional FHM "Sexy Coeds" calendar — right down to the accompanying blurbs, which list the women's colleges and majors, their favorite movies and their favorite foods (the favorite foods thing is such a Tyra touch).

See pictures of the finalists below. If you're so inclined, you can vote for your favorite over on ANTM's Facebook page.

Roman Polanski Directs Helena Bonham Carter and Sir Ben Kingsley for Prada

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

PradaLast night at Cannes, Roman Polanski debuted his new Prada-financed short, A Therapy. Essentially a highbrow ad, the three-minute film stars Helena Bonham Carter as a wealthy woman suffering from daddy issues and ennui and Sir Ben Kingsley as a Freudian shrink with a soft spot for Prada womenswear.

As the wonderful Bonham Carter monologues — she recounts a tedious dream, complains about how hard it is to be so very rich, and prattles on about how much she loves her father — Kingsley creeps away to try on her superb purple fur Prada coat.

Of course a Prada fur is far more compelling than a rich lady's non-problems, but what does it mean that only a dull bougie could afford such a beautiful coat? The question wasn't even considered. Kudos to Prada for bringing these three greats together, and giving them the resources to, in Polanski's words, "have fun on set," but let's not mistake this very good ad for art.

To Prada's credit, all the garments were designed and created exclusively for the film, and won't be available at retail.

Watch Charlotte Free's Maybelline Ad [VIDEO]

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Last month we watched P'trique from "Sh*t Fashion Girls Say" spill the beans about Charlotte Free's new contract with Maybelline. The clip was a pitch-perfect example of how advertisers can create effective campaigns for new media, but it was still, all-in-all, just a supplement to a forthcoming TV spot.

Free's Maybelline commercial popped up online today, and I think she does a good job. Some of the model's previous commercial work (like her Forever 21 campaign) has seemed flat, but this time she left her pretensions and alt-y persona at the door, transforming into the quintessential teen California girl. She's so relatable it makes me want to wash my brain out with soap. brb

According to Michael Kors, Fashion is Kind of Irrelevant

Monday, May 21, 2012

Michael KorsWorld's youngest billionaire Mark Zuckerberg gets no shortage of press on an average day, but since Facebook made its initial public offering (IPO) on Wall Street last Friday, the tech behemoth's founder has been subject to an extra dollop of media scrutiny.

One of the points under discussion: the twentysomthing CEO's hoodie-heavy wardrobe. Can You Lead in a Hoodie? asks Forbes; On His Big Day, Mark Zuckerberg Sticks With a Hoodie, observes the New York Post; CNN thinks Zuckerberg's Hoodie is Savvy, Not Snotty. HoodieHoodieHoodieHoodie.

Of course fashion's newspaper of record had to weigh in. Today's issue of WWD includes an industry take on Facebook's IPO. To address Zuckerberg's slackerish wardrobe, the publication turned to Michael Kors.

“Don’t pay attention to fashion naysayers, Mr. Zuckerberg! I wore black crewnecks, black jackets and jeans before my IPO and I continue to do so after. It’s your talent, vision and performance that people are interested in.”

Ah, so — the fashion designer thinks that it doesn't really matter what you wear, it's what's inside that counts. But only if you're a big big genius like Zuckerberg or Kors himself. The rest of us might want to supplement our feeble minds and mediocre talent with a little trip to the Michael Kors racks at Barneys. Maybe you'd be interested in one of the designer's fur-lined hoodies?
