First Look at Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s

As promised yesterday, Macy’s has just released a preview of Karl Lagerfeld‘s capsule collection, which will hit department stores in late August.

Vogue’s August Issue is running the first photograph of the collection, a basic floral dress set to retail for $109. Small details like a high collar and pouffy sleeves are probably the only thing that separate this dress from similar, and cheaper, offerings from fast fashion outlets like Forever 21 and H&M (the designer’s last diffusion line was for H&M, seven years ago). Lagerfeld said that the dress was “a coup d’oeil to the dresses I designed for Chloe and the girlish, more romantic mood of the seventies.”

I’m all for girlishness and romance, but I had been expecting to see more unusual pieces from Lagerfeld’s capsule collection. The dress is sweet, but you can’t throw a stone without hitting a $100 floral dress.

We’ll have to wait for photos of the other pieces, but it’s possible that Lagerfeld’s line will have a bit more diversity than this first picture lets up. Macy’s passed along sketches of two additional items from the upcoming collection. The sketched looks seem to be a a little more sleek and polished than the dress above, but the success of either look, and the rest of the line, will depend on the quality of construction.
