Looking at Photos of the Elizabeth Taylor Collection Will Ruin Your Life

Until this very morning, I didn’t believe that diamonds could really be a girl’s best friend. I’d always been certain that the role of “best friend” was reserved for actual humans, or possibly kittens, but certainly not for big hunks of rock, no matter how expensive or glittery they might be.

But looking at photos of The Elizabeth Taylor Collection, the iconic actress’ accumulated mass of diamonds, rubies, emeralds, couture, etc., etc., etc., makes me realize I’ve made a grave, grave error.

Currently on tour in cities all over the world and set to go up for auction in December, Taylor’s collection of gems and the like is estimated to be worth at least $15 million. And it’s awesome. If I owned all this stuff, I’d get married eight times too: what’s a husband when you’ve got a tiara?

All jokes aside, I don’t know where you’d wear any of these pieces today, except maybe to the Met Ball (ADR better be gearing up for some serious shopping) or to a costume party. And at tens of thousands of dollars an item, it would be an understatement to say that these jewels are way out of my reach price-wise. And anyway, if I ever brought something so shiny into my home, my kitten would have an epileptic seizure.

I guess I have my priorities straight after all, but if you don’t, feel free to covet without guilt. The full proceeds from the sale of the collection will go to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Collection. Only in Elizabeth Taylor’s legacy could you be saving the world one gemstone at a time.
