The 2012 Acadamy Award nominations have just been announced. I figured that the vast majority of people outside of the film industry only care about a few categories: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and the Supportings. By nature, the Oscar nomination game is fundamentally unsatisfying, a breeding ground for dissenting opinion: we can all nitpick about the selections, pointing to players who were unfairly snubbed or others who were undeserving of their nominations. But I'd like to complain about the overall format of our nominations talk instead.
Hey, isn't it wacky that Best Actors are always listed ahead of Best Actresses in the nomination round-ups, both in the main and supporting categories? When I was a kid, I assumed it was because male Actors were more talented in their craft and more important to a film's success than their female counterparts. But as a much wiser, older Nika, I can say: sorry, but no.
Anyway, other outlets can do as they please, but here on The Fashion Spot, we should probably prioritize women, which is why I've rejiggered the standard categories in my list below. As Nigel Barker said in an interview with us last September, "Where would fashion be without its ladies?"
