The top of The Standard was packed last night as Bacardi celebrated the launch of its new luxury cognac, D'USSE. I stood near the back of the room so absorbed in lobster rolls and conversation that I somehow missed the arrival of the event's most anticipated guest, Jay-Z.
When I wandered through the throng in search of a friend, an imposing security guard blocked my path.
"Where are you going?" he asked.
"Nowhere," I told him. "I'm just walking."
"Ohhhh, you're just walking." He nodded and moved aside.
I took a couple more steps before I noticed that he'd been guarding a roped off area in a sparsely populated area of the room. Jay-Z was sitting at the table with one other person, chowing down. He caught me staring at him, and I half-considered waving, but decided to keep walking before any other security detail wondered what I was up to.
There were some other famous faces, like Solange Knowles, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Pharrell Williams, speckled out among the crowd. Following the success of her bright yellow Rachel Roy peplum dress at the Met Gala on Monday, Knowles wore a canary yellow blazer over a white T-shirt and black shorts.
