With the holiday season just around the corner, it's only fitting that Barbie receives a festive makeover to spread a little seasonal cheer – in couture, of course. Thanks to master milliner Stephen Jones –best known for his eye-catching hat designs for clients like Rihanna, Princess Beatrice, Kate Middleton and Lady Gaga – the iconic doll got the designer treatment with five new couture creations complete with fabulously festive headwear (naturally) for the ultimate party-perfect wardrobe this season. Including cocktail dresses, velvet minis, floor-length and red carpet ready gowns, Jones' collection features Happy Holly Barbie, Christmas Tree Barbie, Snow Globe Barbie, Santa Baby Barbie and Toffee Ice Barbie. "The inspiration behind the looks is traditional Christmas symbolism such as holly, reindeer and snow," said Jones, naming his favorite creation as the Holly Surprise design saying it's "very Barbie and the robin on her head is so cute."
While over the past 50 years Barbie has worn custom creations from couture designers like Azzedine Alaïa, Burberry, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Prada, Jones says, "Barbie is the most fabulous private client. She came into the salon for her Christmas morning hat and left with five glamorous outfits! Barbie and I have the same design vision; we love tradition, but have an eye for the future."
The five dolls will retail at US department store Selfridges for £250 – about $400 – each. While there's no word on whether or not the dolls will be sold in America, you can guarantee we're a little envious over Barbie's growing designer-filled closet.
