Christian Siriano Says He Wasn’t Throwing Shade at Lena Dunham’s Emmy Dress

It seems everyone who saw Lena Dunham‘s Emmy’s dress — the pink tiered Giambattista Valli ombre confection — has plenty to say. While most of the reaction was not-so-great, Lena seemed pretty happy in her frock, which she tweeted looked “like cake” and felt ‘like sweatpants.”

Just after her Emmys appearance, Christian Siriano Instagrammed a photo of a similar-looking dress, one that he designed, captioning the image, “Remembering this ombré tulle gown from our Spring 2010 collection this morning. One of my favorites from the archives!”

Immediately, people speculated on whether Siriano was throwing some shade to Valli — it was quite coincidental that he would bring up this look in the wake of everyone making a fuss over Lena. But Siriano cleared everything up for us last night when we chatted with him on the Fashion Rocks red carpet.

“People love to talk,” he told us. “I just opened my fragrance store — it’s a pop-up store in New York, and I picked four of my favorite dresses, my feeling of what were iconic dresses. That one was in the store, so that was [what] the picture was for,” he explained. “Unfortunately, people jump to their own feeling, which is fine.”

Siriano assured us that he’s got no bad feeling toward Valli or Lena. “Giambattista is amazing, and we love Lena, so I would never.”
