Rachel Zoe and her team had better have a good explanation for this design misstep. The stylist-cum-designer is being accused of knocking off a frock from Valentino’s Fall 2013 collection, and it looks like the folks calling out Zoe may have a point. Lily Collins was decked out in a look from Zoe’s Pre-Fall 2015 collection for an appearance on Extra — a floral print dress with a white pointed collar and oversized cuffs that bears a strong resemblance to Valentino’s version of the piece. Save for the scalloped hemline, mesh underlay, a slightly different (yet not dissimilar) print and different collar-to-cuff ratios, Zoe’s version is essentially the same dress.
Designers getting “inspired” by one another happens all the time. Olivier Rousteing showed a suit set for Balmain’s Spring 2015 collection that looked a lot like a Givenchy Couture piece from 1997. Karl Lagerfeld’s take on New Balance’s classic shoe design got him slapped with a lawsuit from the label. Chanel showed some cuffs on its Fall 2012 runway that looked extremely similar to Pamela Love’s Fall 2011 bracelets. Still, it is a bit disheartening when it does happen and this time is no exception.
At least Lily looks cute.
