How Is M&S Upping Its Fashion Game?

There’s no denying that over the years, British department store M&S has had its ups and downs with its fashion offerings. It started out as being what seemed like your grandma’s go-to that transformed into a stylish destination attracting a much younger, trend-driven audience. Sales in recent years, however, have continuously dwindled as it has struggled to compete with the high street’s offerings. Up until now, we’ve been thinking that nothing short of a miracle could save it.

Now, it seems that the retailer has finally turned a corner and restored some much-needed fashion credibility. M&S is putting its recent boost in sales all down to a simple 70s suede skirt, which was papped being worn by international style icons, like Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung during key Fashion Week events. The £199 skirt isn’t available until tomorrow, and there’s already a waiting list in place. Plus, it’ll only be available in select M&S stores. Exclusive much? It’s hard to believe that we’re talking about M&S!

So, what else can we expect from a brand that now dresses the FROW? Well, it seems that the retailer is set on upping the fashion stakes even more by announcing the launch of an exclusive Shoreditch-inspired capsule collection. Shoreditch is, of course, the hipsters go-to in East London and is quite possibly the polar opposite of how M&S is perceived.

The Shoreditch-inspired collection isn’t all Dr. Martens and fishermen’s beards, however, as that would obviously leave the usual M&S customer quaking in their boots, but rather a watered-down version of the hip trends applied to some much-loved staples. We can expect cool items like dungarees and denim jackets, though!

All in all, the M&S Limited London capsule collection will feature 16 pieces, manufactured in its eco-approved factories with an aim of reflecting London’s bold, much sought-after style. For now, you can check out a sneak peek of a sketch from the collection above, but rest assured that you’ve only got to wait until 28 May when you’ll be able to shop the collection for yourself in select M&S stores.
