You’ll Never Guess Which Actress Was in the Running to Play Cher in ‘Clueless’ over 20 Years Ago

It’s been 20 years since the 1995 cult classic Clueless hit theaters, but you wouldn’t be able to tell if you looked at some of the film’s stars today – like Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd – who have failed to age since the film’s release. But if you thought you knew everything you needed to know about the film, think again. The Hollywood Reporter chatted with Clueless director Amy Heckerling, who touched on a few insider details on the film’s casting.

Alicia Silverstone will always be remembered for her role in the film, but another blond-haired actress we know and love also had a shot at the role. According to Heckerling, Reese Witherspoon was in the running to play Cher. “She had such a strong personality and sense of self,” she said. “[But] she would have to act Cher — Alicia was Cher.”  Also up for a part was Dave Chapelle, who read to play Donald Faison’s role of Murray in the movie. Though Chapelle was certainly hilarious, she thought that he was just too grown to play the part in the way that Faison could. “[Chappelle] was just amazing — he was such a mensch,” Heckerling said. “I needed somebody who was really innocent, a goofy kid.”

The film came together perfectly with the cast that was ultimately chosen, but we can definitely see how both Witherspoon and Chapelle could have been in the running for those roles.
