As delicious as it is, the sad truth is that bacon isn’t good for you. Bummer. But wait – there may be a remedy for you health-conscious bacon-lovers out there. A particular strain of red algae called dulse is being developed by researchers at Oregon State University. Apparently, dulse is packed with twice the nutritional value of kale and that, coupled with the delicious taste of bacon, means you can enjoy your favorite breakfast food guilt-free.
Researchers say that when the seaweed is fried, it unleashes its bacon flavor. Dulse has been eaten by people in parts of northern Europe for quite some time and the researchers are looking to develop products to help sell the superfood. “We now have about five products that we think will be very good commercial products,” OSU business professor Chuck Toombs said. “This stuff grows, under the right conditions, five times as fast as anything else.”
We’re curious to taste the stuff for ourselves, but if it tastes as much like bacon as they say it does, dulse could be a real game-changer.
