Carine Roitfeld Taps Katy Perry, Mariah Carey and Oprah Winfrey for Harper’s Bazaar’s ICONS Issue

Harper’s Bazaar just released cover images for its September ICONS issue, which features a gorgeous 17-page portfolio directed by global fashion director Carine Roitfeld. The issue will feature nine modern icons, including Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Chris Lee, Dakota Johnson, Jessica Chastain, Willow Smith and Lucky Blue Smith (the first male featured in one of Roitfeld’s quarterly global features).

And just like every issue, there’s a fun twist. Photographed by legendary photographer Jean-Paul Goude, with creative direction by Stephen Gan, the celebrities, actors and musicians were actually styled and photographed as their own personal inspirational icons. From Marie Antoinette to Coco Chanel, this is one September issue you don’t want to miss out on. Goude is famous for his detailed shots that often blur boundaries between fantasy and reality, so expect an out of this world, fantasy-like photo spread.

In the magazine feature, each modern-day icon was asked to speak on their inspiration. “An icon transcends time,” said Katy Perry when asked about Liz Taylor. “Liz was so fabulous and decadent and had a style that evolved with the years…and I’m sure I’ll be married just as many times!” To see some of the quotes and images, click through the slideshow below.
