WATCH: Australian Personalities Unite in New Marriage Equality Campaign

The latest campaign for Australian Marriage Equality features many Australian celebrities and athletes throwing their support behind equality for all. The newly released TVC’s include messages from the likes of Hugo Weaving, Julia Morris, Danielle Cormack, AFL players, former reality TV contestants and even religious leaders.

Together they want to raise awareness and gain support using the hashtag #WeCanDoThis, in the hopes that the nation’s leaders will take note of the majority who are in favour of same-sex marriage.

As Julia Morris says in one ad, “We’ve waited long enough,” and “Everybody deserves to be equal.” Meanwhile in another clip, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert‘s Hugo sums it up quite simply with, “It makes sense. It’s about giving everyone a fair go.”

The ads started airing yesterday, August 9, on Foxtel, Win regional television and Sky News, “We’ve got a very core focus on Sky News to make sure these MPs actually get to see the ads,” the deputy campaign director, Ivan Hinton-Teoh, told The Guardian.

Negotiations are continuing with other broadcasters, with a GoFundMe fundraising push to broaden the campaign nationally having already raised more than $9,000.

The campaign comes at a pivotal time in the argument for marriage equality. Thousands turned out nationwide to rally in support as a cross-party bill is expected to be introduced this week in federal parliament once it resumes.
