Alexa Chung’s New App Seems Strangely Familiar

Resident It girl Alexa Chung is delving into the world of tech with new app Villoid, a social style app that is threatening the stability of our wallets. The premise is simple and not entirely foreign – the app allows users to browse through a wide selection of clothing and accessories, ‘love’ all their favorites and arrange their picks on mood boards, which they can share with the Villoid community. The app also allows you to upload images from your phone to the mix. You can also follow other users whose looks you fancy on the app, as well as like other peoples’ items and boards. Oh, yeah – and you can purchase the items you love because no style app would be complete without a shopping element.

Chung said she got inspired by a certain beloved 90s teen movie character as she was putting together the app. “I suppose that scene in Clueless where the computer puts an outfit together from Cher’s wardrobe really stayed with me,“ Chung said. “Clothes are fun, making mistakes is fun, being inspired is fun. Villoid celebrates the process of getting dressed and showing your friends.”

We tried the app today and while we can’t knock Ms. Chung’s hustle, the app does feel similar to other shopping/mood board-based apps we’ve used before. With shopping apps like Polyvore on the market, this seems like a slightly different take on a classic setup, with Chung’s special touch. Perhaps we can describe it as a hybrid between Polyvore, Instagram and Pinterest.
