Kelly Rowland’s New Makeup Line Will Cater to ‘Chocolate Girls’

Black beauty is a $7.5 billion market, yet there is still a dearth of foundation options for women of color. Leave it to Kelly Rowland to step in and fill that void. The Grammy Award-winning artist is launching her first-ever cosmetics line in collaboration with makeup artist Sheika Daley and the product range will specifically target women with darker complexions.

“My makeup artist Sheika Daley and I are actually starting a makeup line. […] we’re starting off with lashes and then we’re going to have it grow for all women,” Rowland told Essence. “But definitely making sure we have our chocolate girls covered. Gotta get the chocolate girls in there! We have to have that, you know. I think Iman has done a beautiful makeup line and I want to do it too!”

As a ‘chocolate girl’ herself, Kelly Rowland recalls dealing with makeup artists who were unprepared to work with her complexion. “I remember going to Europe and there was this one makeup artist — I’m a chocolate girl, and she made me look pink,” she told People. “And then when she tried again, I looked green. And then when she tried again, I looked way fairer than what I really am.”

Thanks to Rowland’s latest endeavor, dark-skinned women can finally grab their perfect shade. Look out for her new makeup line, which is rumored to launch sometime this year.
