If Kim Kardashian Says Contouring Is Over, It Must Be True

Out with the old, in with the new: “Nontouring” has officially replaced contouring as the premier feature-defining beauty trend. Kim Kardashian West, once the outspoken face of the technique, officially heralded its death during her appearance at this past Saturday’s Vogue Festival alongside fellow makeup enthusiast Charlotte Tilbury and editor-at-large Fiona Golfar.

Wanna see how @scottbarnes68 contours?!

While Kim had the luxury of touting the time-consuming trend on a much more daily basis than those of us sans glam team and red carpet bookings, she too seems to have tired of the pretense and effort required. She even forwent makeup when she gave birth to Saint (to those of you who don’t Keep Up, for Nori she was in full glam).

“I think right now it’s more about nontouring, like real skin with less makeup on it. I’m trying to wear less… and my husband loves me without makeup,” Kardashian-West told “a packed auditorium” that included said doting partner, Vogue reports. To this, our inner Miranda Priestly remarks, “Real skin as a beauty statement? Groundbreaking.”

It appears Kanye, along with cultural trends or other unknown motivations, has done to Kim’s makeup bag what the rapper once did to her walk-in: “Now when I travel I just bring a small makeup case, and I’m content with that. I’m really into strobing now, so just highlighting the skin without using bronzer. I love contouring and I don’t think I’d stop contouring my nose — I know people think I’ve had a nose job but it really is just makeup!” Now there’s a tutorial that would (almost) entice us to subscribe to her app.

Our preferred nontouring essentials include Milk Makeup’s highlighter in Lit or Pat McGrath Labs’ Skin Fetish 003. For those seeking to precisely emulate Kim’s shine, the reality TV star’s streamlined cosmetics case features: “An eyelash curler, a mini Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in the perfect nude that she created for me, mascara — Charlotte’s Legendary Lashes is my favorite — my Joe Blasco foundation, a little MAC kabuki brush, a gold eye pencil by Kardashian Beauty, a small pot of powder, blush and my Smashbox bronzer.”

Other big reveal from Kim’s appearance? Early episodes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians make her cringe thanks to the “crazy hair and bad makeup.” (Come again? The grit? The presence of a delightful Rob? It’s all about the early seasons.) Also, North West will likely follow in the footsteps of the beauty baroness: “My daughter loves playing with makeup just like I did. I went to makeup school at age 14, and I’d do the same for her,” Kim affirmed.

All in all, while trends are meant to be followed or flouted as we so choose, for our part, this is one we’re glad to bid goodbye.
