Karl Lagerfeld’s Luxe New DIY Sneakers Will Run You Up to $4000

Taking a page out of DIY enthusiast Alessandro Michele’s book, Karl Lagerfeld will soon offer his own range of one-of-a-kind buys. Starting July 7, the Chanel and Fendi frontman’s eponymous brand will sell customizable sneakers. While Lagerfeld’s latest project may seem out of character for the suede boot-wearing style baron, upscale sneakers have long been coveted investment pieces among the fashion set, so this endeavor — unlike, say, a drawing kit costing $2,822 — seems a natural progression.

The Karl Kustomize option (the fashion mogul’s perhaps spending too much time with Kim and Kendall) allows customers 10 variables to personalize their shoelaces, linings, trims, hardware and logos. Uppers can be either suede, patent or metallic leather or of an exotic skin. It’s Nike iD but just a smidgen more expensive — prices range from 325 euros to 3,500 euros (or $360 to $3,875 at current exchange rates, but who knows where those numbers are headed). Allow around six weeks for realization and another few days for delivery, unless you live in London, Paris or Munich, in which case you can pick up your kicks in-store and walk them home very, very carefully.
