Taking a leaf out of Karl Lagerfeld’s and Hedi Slimane’s books, Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing tries his hand at photography for the brand’s Fall 2017 advertising campaign. Ditching experienced photographer Steven Klein, Olivier gets behind the lens to express his vision for Balmain’s latest collection in the dynamic campaign. Who better than fierce beauties Natasha Poly and Lara Stone to help bring Rousteing’s aesthetic to life? Captured around various Paris locations, the blonde duo is joined by a handful of male models for the stark black and white campaign images.
How did Olivier’s photographic debut go over in our forums? “Photographed by Olivier Rousteing? Didn’t think this brand could get any worse,” voiced disapproving forum member anlabe32 the second the campaign dropped.
“Karl doesn’t need to lose any sleep! His photography is as vulgar as his clothes, don’t get it. At least Klein knows his angles and blocking, Olivier’s photography looks like some amateur digital photography you see on random Tumblr pages. What’s the ‘story’ here, if there even was one,” critiqued Benn98. (more…)
Allure is currently riding a wave of success after receiving much-deserved praise last month from our forums for its groundbreaking Halima Aden cover. Now, Emily Ratajkowski, the current face of Harper’s Bazaar Australia, stars on the cover of the August 2017 issue, shot by photographer Daniel Jackson. In the commanding photo, Emily ditches her long tresses in favor of a blunt bobbed wig, while going even further to switch up her usual bombshell look throughout the featured cover story.
Our forum members wasted no time voicing their opinions. “It’s flawless, in an artificial way. The tan, lips, hair, it’s all too perfect. Yet it’s a welcome reprieve to see a beauty magazine go back to basics by ditching the gimmicks. I also see they’re trying a new art direction. Not to my taste, I’m afraid,” said Benn98.
“Looks really dated. Nice to see her on the cover though. But a smile would’ve done this more justice. The overall mood is just so depressing (albeit the season). The layout (although looking better) looks very very dated, 2004 realness! On the bright side, at least they’re trying to step up,” MON acknowledged. (more…)
You can always rely on Love Magazine to deliver out-of-the-box cover concepts. Gearing up for the release of its upcoming Fall/Winter 2017 edition, the magazine released an issue teaser last month starring Hailey Baldwin and Miss Piggy. As it turns out, actress Nicole Kidman is Love‘s latest cover girl as she tries on a whole new image in a swimsuit and cowboy hat (not your average Kidman cover). Photographed by Carin Backoff, Nicole poses on location in Nashville, Tennessee while rendering our forum members almost speechless.
“Obsessed!” declared forum member magsaddict the moment the cover dropped.”It’s great to see a more casual side of Nicole, we’re so used to seeing her styled in a very regal and modest way. It’s a ballsy cover and she pulls it off effortlessly,” he stated.
“I actually like this. I’ve always enjoyed seeing celebrities, who we’re so used to looking polished and perfect, stripped back and a little gritty. Plus it’s someone who actually has earned her fame through this weird thing called talent and hard work so that’s always a plus, especially for Love,” praised lelaid. (more…)
Our forum members have been pretty tough on some of Emilia Clarke’s past magazine covers, including awkward images for Glamour and British Harper’s Bazaar. Thankfully, her latest, the August 2017 cover of ELLE, is a vast improvement over previous appearances. Photographed by Alexi Lubomirski, Emilia gives us major Sophia Loren vibes, vamping it up for the newsstand cover (below) wearing Dolce & Gabbana.

Despite Emilia’s beautiful photo, the cover failed to captivate the majority of our forum members. “It looks odd. Enter the Dragon? Really?” quipped MON, suggesting he would have ditched the obnoxious cover line.
“Always happy to see Emilia, she’s such a babe and is actually talented too. The Enter the Dragon is just weird, though,” echoed SallyAlbright. (more…)
We haven’t seen Miley Cyrus at the newsstand for what feels like an eternity (her last notable appearance was the October 2016 cover of ELLE). Now, with a new album on the way and a fresh look, Miley stages a comeback on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar for August 2017. Following in the footsteps of Lady Gaga, Madonna and Rihanna, Miley helps Bazaar continue its milestone 150th anniversary celebrations, participating in a dreamy Camilla Akrans cover shoot while looking effortless and at ease.

“Are we back to 2006?” snarked forum member Miss Dalloway upon seeing the cover, instantly showing her disapproval. “How dated, garish, and all around awful cover. Although for once the newsstands cover is an outside shot, still SMH!”
“Why is everything so busy here? The cover, Miley’s edit, and the fashion content. I applaud them for going with such a nice shot for the newsstand version, but they had to ruin it with that art direction. I don’t think I could bring myself to get this issue, especially with Miley pushing her faux reinvention,” added Benn98. (more…)
What does Gigi Hadid have to do to get a solo cover of American Vogue? Exactly one year ago, Gigi made the cover of the American fashion bible alongside Olympic athlete Ashton Eaton and was joined by six of her fellow models on the magazine’s March cover this year. She’s now given the cover of Vogue‘s newly unveiled August issue — posing alongside boyfriend Zayn Malik. Nonetheless, the current face of Stuart Weitzman looks amazing as she cozies up to Zayn at the beach, with Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin capturing the sweet moment as the pair wear head-to-toe Gucci selected by stylist Tonne Goodman.

Members of our forums weren’t all to impressed. “That’s a dreadful cover. They look like they’re dressed in charity shop cast-offs, in the worst Doctor Who cosplay ever seen,” voiced tigerrouge upon checking out the cover.
“It’s just way too busy and way too Gucci. Gigi’s blazer doesn’t really match, and what’s that green mold spreading on Zayn? Easily the worst styled American Vogue cover I’ve ever laid eyes on,” Benn98 critiqued. (more…)
