Watch: Alek Wek in the H&M Conscious Foundation’s Latest PSA

Alek Wek is the ambassador for the H&M Conscious Foundation and she’s using her platform as a way to build awareness about the retailer’s efforts to do some good in the world.

The model stars in the latest PSA, which explains how H&M came to support various charities. It was a two-part effort: A board of advisers, which included Archbishop Desmond Tutu, chose serious humanitarian issues and let the public vote on which ones the foundation should support.

Thanks to customer votes, the H&M Conscious Foundation pledged to donate proceeds to charities that empower women, provide clean water and early childhood education in disadvantaged areas. H&M has partnered with UNICEF, WaterAid and the CARE foundation for its conscious project, which will help hundreds of thousands of women and children.

Model Kate Peck Befriended a 2.5m Snake for CanTeen’s Dare to Be Brave Campaign

As if we didn’t love Kate Peck enough already. Now the can-do-no-wrong model has gone and upped our affections for her, by taking the time out of her jam-packed day to befriend a 2.5 metre long snake for a charitable cause.

It was all for CanTeen’s Dare to be Brave campaign, which challenges us to be as brave as young people affected by cancer by doing something we’ve always wanted to do. For Kate, that involved a mega reptile that, if it could stand, is taller than even the leggiest of models. (more…)

Reebok Australia Owes You Money for Not Boosting Your Butt’s Muscle Tone

Sorry, everyone. Reebok lied to you. But it’s literally going to pay for its fabricating ways, and you could benefit. The sportswear brand has been fined a whopping $350,000 in Australia for making false claims and statements about its EasyTone shoe range, which it said would boost muscle tone of thighs, calves and your butt more than normal sneakers.

Even though EasyTone shoes have been available in Australia since December 2009, the Federal Court has just now ruled that the representations made on shoe boxes, swing tags, information cards and in-store promotional material were misleading, breached three sections of Australian Consumer Law, and that Reebok had no reasonable grounds to make such claims.

As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, Reebok claimed “balance pods built-in under the heel” and “balance ball-inspired technology with moving air” in EasyTone shoes would increase “muscle activation” of the butt area by 28 per cent and of thighs and calves by 11 per cent, but did so without any scientific evidence to back this promise. British “it” brand Whistles is teaming up with jewelry designer Madeleine Moxham for a limited edition capsule collection due out October 26. The range stays true to Moxham’s aesthetic — utilitarian details and hardware-like flourishes, all in a monochrome palette. The collection has the kind of products that you can truly figure out a way to wear with anything.

Leather straps, metal rivets and geometric shapes are the name of the game for this offering. You’ll find leather and cut steel bracelets, headbands with leather straps as well as necklaces with detachable pendants hanging from trigger hooks. If you’re looking for something even simpler, sleek collar necklaces in either black or white with a ribbon tie may tickle your fancy.

Lucky U.K. residents will be able to shop the collection starting Sunday, though the collection will also be available through the Whistles website. Prices start at £35 ($56 USD) for a leather clip and peak at £95 ($152 USD) for a necklace.

WWD Is Hiring a Ton of New Staff

In late August, the fashion industry was rocked by the announcement that Condé Nast was selling Fairchild Fashion Media, the company that puts out Women’s Wear Daily and Footwear News, to Penske Media Corporation. It appeared that Penske was trying to make a name for itself as the leader in trade publications — it also owns Variety, making WWD a great addition to the company’s roster. Plus, Fairchild was selling for $500 million less than what Condé Nast bought it for back in 1999 — a great deal for the folks at Penske.

As with any major change in management, Fairchild is about to go through staff and logistical shakeups. Racked reported that Penske is encouraging the paper to be a little more critical in its coverage and now it looks like the publication is scouting a ton of new staffers to fit that model. In today’s issue of WWD, there is a full page ad from Fairchild announcing that it is hiring for several staff positions — 37 to be exact.

“We’re hiring,” it reads at the top of the ad in bold white lettering against a black background, adding, “Yes, you read this correctly,” just in case you didn’t believe the paper the first time.

WWD is looking for a deputy fashion editor, reporters in both New York and Los Angeles, a Europe editor for Footwear News, a social media director and several other positions. We’re not sure if this means there will be some people at WWD and Footwear News who should watch their backs, but the assumption is for a mass hiring like this one, there may be some people let go.

Anyway, if you’re looking to work at WWD, now’s the time to send in your resume.
