Leomie Anderson Blasts Makeup Artists Who Aren’t Prepared to Work With Black Models

In our Spring 2016 runway diversity report, we found that 77.6 percent of the 9,926 models at Fashion Month were white. But representation is only the beginning. The black models who do get booked for shows must grapple with makeup artists and hair stylists who are unequipped to work with women of color. Nykor Paul spoke out last season about makeup artists who fail to accommodate black models. In 2013, Jourdan Dunn aired out hair stylists who can’t properly style black hair. Now Leomie Anderson is the latest model to add her voice to the conversation.

She tweeted yesterday about her experience dealing with creatives who can’t adequately style women of color: (more…)

#BlackModelsMatter: Zac Posen Uses Almost All Models of Color for Fall 2016

Last season’s runway diversity report revealed that a whopping 77.6 percent of the models who walked runways in New York, London, Paris and Milan were white. The push for inclusion continues this season at New York Fashion Week. Though the numbers from our official NYFW diversity report won’t be in until next week, this season seems to be a mixed bag, with several designers featuring few (or no) models of color and others including many.

Zac Posen opted to embrace diversity in a big way, sending mostly black models down the runway for Fall 2016. His collection of gowns and tailored pantsuits was inspired by the first East African woman to be admitted to the English bar, Princess Elizabeth of Toro. Perhaps to honor her legacy and push for change, Posen made sure a variety of skin tones and hair textures were represented on the runway. Grace Bol, Aya Jones, Cindy Bruna and Riley Montana stormed the catwalk alongside Africa’s Next Top Model winner, Aamito Lagum.  (more…)

Natasha Poly Delights in This Energetic Express Campaign (Forum Buzz)

It should come as no surprise that Express sourced Natasha Poly for its new energetic and full-of-life advertising campaign for Spring 2016. After all, Natasha is in full form lately, scoring campaigns with La Perla and Versace. The American fashion retailer took things to a whole new level this season, enlisting the photographic expertise of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin to capture the shoot on the picturesque shores of Puerto Rico with Natasha showcasing a cute little black dress and modeling like there’s no tomorrow.

Kanye West is having a rough week. After a star-studded fashion show extravaganza, he admitted to the world that he’s $53 million in debt and publicly asked Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to financially bail him out. His album rollout left people scratching their heads when he pushed the premiere date back and only released it on Tidal. Not to mention, his wildly offensive lyrics about Taylor Swift left a bad taste in everyone’s mouths. Now, his bad fortune is hitting a bit closer to home.

We Almost Didn’t Recognize Kylie Jenner on This Surprisingly Good Wonderland Cover (Forum Buzz)

Who better than someone with 51 million Instagram followers to front an issue of a magazine dedicated to fame? Therefore, it should really come as no surprise that Wonderland asked Kylie Jenner to be its cover star for Spring 2016. The Jenner girls are absolutely everywhere and aren’t showing any signs of disappearing from newsstands worldwide. Photographed by Richard Kern, the youngest of the Jenner clan wears Gucci as she nonchalantly poses in what we assume is her bathroom at home.

Emily Ratajkowski Slams Sexual Shaming in Lena Dunham’s Feminist Newsletter, Lenny

Emily Ratajkowski has written a powerful essay slamming the sexual shaming of women and calling for women to define their sexuality in their own terms.

In the essay, which is titled Baby Woman and published in Lena Dunham’s feminist newsletter Lenny, Ratajkowski outlines her own experiences of sexual shaming from the age of 13 to present in anecdotes through growing up and becoming a model at a young age.

From being criticised for wearing what she wanted at 13, to getting “looks from men” (because that’s all her fault) and being told “you need to hide out, a girl like you, keep a low profile” by ‘concerned’ family friends, Ratajkowski has been exposed to more than her fair share of sexual shaming.

She writes: “When I was 15, the adults in my life were concerned by my modelling at such a young age. They’d heard the horror stories of creepy middle-aged men taking advantage of young women, or agents pressuring girls to lose weight.” (more…)
