i-D Serves Up Lara Stone’s Head on a Platter

If you liked Lara Stone's bizarro hair antler i-D cover, there's more where that came from. Here's the editorial, photographed by Tyrone Lebone and fashion-directed by Charlotte Stockdale.

One image shows a topless Stone covering herself with two strategically placed wine glasses; another has the Dutch model's crudely made-up face resting on a fruit platter — lips shiny and red, eyeliner thick, hair clipped up in a barette; even though the third shot isn't so in-your-face, it still feels Lynchian thanks to the headless Sphinx chair and Stone's oversized, furry Sister by Sibling top and white cowboy boot stilettos.

Asked in the accompanying interview whether he thinks fashion photography should be beautiful, Lebone says, "Not really it gets boring doesn’t it. But fashion photography is fundamentally about selling aspirations through clothes. And most people aspire to beauty. So it follows that fashion photography should be beautiful to serve its main purpose. But there is a bit of space around the edges to work within fashion and achieve something more than this, and this is where it becomes interesting."

The issue features another equally good-weird shoot by the same creative team starring "model-of-the-moment" Cara Delevingne, which you can see here.

Emilia Clarke Turns Heads at the Game of Thrones Premiere (Forum Buzz)

Emilia Clarke in Victoria Beckham

We haven’t singled out 25-year-old actress Emilia Clarke before, but her look at the Season 3 premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones has caused forum members to sit up and take notice. Wearing a blue column gown by Victoria Beckham with minimal accessories and sleek, straight hair and a smoky eye, she looked polished and lovely.

“She is stunning! Love the dress, hair, everything!” fantastical exclaimed.

“She looks amazing! One of her best looks, in my opinion,” johnnys_girl09 shared. But, she had one gripe. “Her eyebrows seem a tad bit overdrawn… And this is coming from a person who has Emilia-eyebrow-envy!” she added.

Belowen had a similar take on the look. “The shading of her eye makeup seems to highlight her big brows (which normally I ADORE) and not in a flattering way. Other than that element I love this look.”

CommanderTMugler also gave Emilia’s look some love. “Wow, she looks stunning, [the dark hair is] a good contrast to when I normally just see her as a blonde on the show. It really makes her eyes pop more. I do agree the eyebrows are a bit too dark and heavy but she pulls it off.”

I have no idea where the plot of Game of Thrones is going, but I think we can at least predict that our red carpet interest in Emilia has definitely been piqued.

Buzzfeed Asks Casting Directors to Explain Lack of Diversity at Fashion Week

According to Jezebel's seasonal count of runway diversity at New York Fashion Week, the situation continues to be pretty bleak. 82.7% of the models that walked in the February shows were white. Some designers, like Calvin Klein (pictured), didn't hire a single nonwhite model to walk in their collections.

Buzzfeed asked five of the industry's top casting directors to explain why the industry hasn't gotten it together with regards to racial diversity, despite years of pressure outside groups.

Some respondents were outraged:

James Scully (Tom Ford, Jason Wu, Derek Lam, Stella McCartney, Lanvin & Carolina Herrera) — "I feel the Dior cast is just so pointedly white that it feels deliberate. I watch that show and it bothers me — I almost can't even concentrate on the clothes because of the cast."

Others pointed to the limitations of the selection pool:

Jennifer Starr (Ralph Lauren, Ohne Titel, Gap, David Bowie & the Pirelli Calendar) — "If there are 200 new white girls, and five break out as stars, then if there are six or ten new black girls, the statistics are not in their favor. It's a loaded conversation, but can anyone be faulted for not casting someone they don't absolutely love?"

Some were totally in denial:

Barbara Nicoli and Leila Ananna (Burberry, Marchesa, Gucci, Emilio Pucci, Armani Privé & Saint Laurent)

Nicoli: "I don't like to talk in terms of white, Asian, black, etc., because a model is a model and that's it. To me, if we want to talk about diversity, it's about the model and not the color of their skin. It's more about the body, the face, and the attitude."

Ananna: "Regarding the representation of various faces [on runways], we think fashion shows have already shown it. Don't you? There are plenty of different faces in a show."

Watch Cara Delevingne Make Faces for Yves Saint Laurent Babydoll Mascara

I always feel kind of like a sucker when I write up a post praising an ad — which is, after all, simply a vehicle to get me and you to buy stuff of dubious value  — but I don't want to have to justify why you should watch the Yves Saint Laurent Babydoll Mascara commercial (oy) starring Cara Delevingne, embedded below. Whether or not you approve of the British model's hyped up It girl status (or her "caterpillar-like" eyebrows), I bet you can imagine how well her goofy sense of humor and facial plasticity (or whatever … she makes silly faces) works in a beauty ad. When I initially heard about this Cara D. / YSL contract, I even made this joke: "I will buy ten tubes [of the brand's mascara] if they let her make funny faces." I'm glad I followed that hilarity up by saying, "Actually, no I won't," because otherwise I'd be 300 mascara dollars in the hole.

Lara Stone joins models Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss on one of i-D's Spring 2013 covers [via the Forums]. Some of you probably have mixed feelings about her sleepy weird wink, but I think we can all appreciate the sparing use of face-Photoshop (see, even models age! Mortality is still a thing) and also the space hair antlers on display.

I'm not even joking (not really) about the hair, this is my dream style! I am going to go to the drugstore this evening to buy flat bobby pins and cheapo hairspray and I am going to WOW you with a tutorial. I mean, that's not a promise but we are going to talk about what you and me and everyone we know can do to get this look and you can walk around with it and be basically the coolest people in the world. ANTLER ARMY it is happening.
