A First Look at the Met’s China: Through the Looking Glass Exhibit

It’s been a frigid February and with temperatures at about 9 degrees right now in New York City, most of us can’t wait until the warmer months arrive. For the folks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, May can’t come soon enough — but not just because of the cold. Today, the museum held a press briefing and preview of its next Costume Institute exhibit, China: Through the Looking Glass.

The museum live-tweeted the press conference this morning, offering a few teaser images and details of what to expect from the upcoming exhibition. On tap will be more than 130 pieces of ready-to-wear and couture. The clothing will be shown alongside other Chinese works of art and film, like a strapless fishtail gown, which boasts a similarly ornate design as a painted dragon vase.

China: Through the Looking Glass will run from May 7 to August 16. Check the gallery below for a few images from the exhibit. (more…)

Rihanna Helps W Korea Celebrate Its 10th Anniversary with a Trio of Covers (Forum Buzz)

Multi-covers are all the rage this month. Vogue Germany ignited the trend with Anna Ewers, Vogue Paris followed suit and now W Korea jumps on the bandwagon. For March 2015, the magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary with three covers featuring Rihanna, photographed by Dennis Leupold. The “FourFiveSeconds” singer and current Harper’s Bazaar cover girl is shown in various setups serving good face (as always), wearing a number of interesting looks.

Has the mag done enough to satisfy our forum members? “She rocks those Korean eyebrows,” Pricciao complimented.

“The ones with the white and yellow dress are such beautiful covers! Her stare on those 2 is just so inviting. It’s like the styling and the setting show a lot of attitude but her eyes are just showing vulnerability! I love it! The one with the blue dress and with her leg up is just an awkward cover. The shot is forced and it’s like a shot from the ed just used to make three covers all in all,” added MON.

“They’ve chosen randomly to feature Rihanna on 3 covers and for their 10th anniversary? Couldn’t they have found well-known Korean superstars or top models on the cover of their fashion magazine? I don’t know, the whole thing looks off to me and I usually like what they do, not this time though,” ranted Bertrando3, bringing up a valid point.

Benn98 agreed, “I really want to like it as well, especially since they managed to produce this themselves, but every shot of her looks awkward. And something more extravagant or special could’ve been better for the 10th anniversary.”

As did justaguy, who said, “None of these are working for me as covers.”

Kim Kardashian

Have you been wondering why Kim Kardashian has been chosen as a guest judge for Cycle 9 of Australia’s Next Top Model?  Don’t worry, we have too, and the answer is just as self-absorbed as you imagined.

Daily Mail Australia reports that Kim will set a challenge for the contestants to see who can take the best selfie, because if you can’t selfie then they’ll be damned if you can make it in the modelling industry.

The aspiring models will be dressed head-to-toe in Kardashian Kollection for their selfies, and Kim will judge the shots, presumably on criteria based on angles and levels of nudity. The winning selfie will be uploaded to Kim’s personal Instagram account as well as the Kardashian Kollection’s, reaching over 28 million combined followers. That’s some pretty major coverage, if Kim Kardashian is a “brand” you want to be associated with… (more…)

Alex Perry Will Take the Bench for Australian Fashion Week in 2015

Sorry, lovers of lace, sparkles and luxe fashion-forward frocks, your favourite sunglasses-on-head designer, Alex Perry, won’t be showing at Australian fashion week this year.

Perry confirmed to The Australian that his eponymous label won’t be taking part in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia for 2015 because he’d rather focus on its growth in the international market. “Just that European, Middle Eastern and Asian component has taken over what our sales are in Australia in two years,” Perry told The Australian.

The namesake brand, which has garnered attention from Giuliana Rancic, Gigi Hadid and Lucy Hale, has tallied an impressive 36 per cent growth overseas in the past two years, and Perry has just signed a US agent to make his schedule even busier. “Whilst we grow the business in the US, there’s a ceiling on what we are able to do here,” he explained.  “It’s unfortunate timing, but it is what it is.” (more…)

Gigi Hadid Gets Her First Solo Vogue Cover with Vogue Spain’s March Issue (Forum Buzz)

We’ve been waiting for Gigi Hadid’s feature for Vogue Spain to surface after the magazine took to its Instagram page to announce the collaboration a few weeks back. We needn’t wait any longer as the Spanish fashion title just released the final product. Gigi made the cover, which marks a first for the star of Pirelli’s 2015 calendar, who already fronts this month‘s Teen Vogue issue alongside Binx Walton (beating Kendall Jenner to a Vogue cover). Vogue Spain’s March 2015 cover sees the American beauty posed on the studio floor for Benny Horne, while wearing head-to-toe Gucci, giving us 70s supermodel vibes.

Members of our forums are currently voicing their opinions inside the thread. “Love it!! Gigi looks like the 70s/80s models. She has a very healthy and fresh beauty,” dina19 complimented, getting us off on a positive note.

“She looks stunning here, it’s a gorgeous cover,” added Miss Dalloway.

Feeling the same way was GlamorousBoy, who simply described the cover as “beautiful” inside the thread.

“No denying that this is gorgeous. No stopping Gigi,” declared TeeVanity.

But not everyone was on board. “I wonder what’s going on [in] the mind of Yolanda to pass such a cover for publication? On what universe is this counted as a high fashion cover worthy of a Vogue title?” asked MON.

“Oh geez Benny Horne, don’t lower yourself by associating with this magazine at its current tragic state,” HeatherAnne hissed.

“Gimme a break…” wrote Creative, suggesting he’s so over Gigi already.

See inside the thread for more commentary and let us know what you think of Gigi’s latest portfolio addition here.
