Melissa McCarthy Is Launching a Clothing Line Next Fall

Melissa McCarthy is the latest celebrity to throw her name behind a clothing line. Except this is more than just a vanity project. Melissa famously mentioned her intent to start her own line after having to deal with the challenges of dressing her plus-sized body. As she told Redbook, “When I go shopping, most of the time I’m disappointed. Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers—very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people—and they all said no.” Now, the dream has become a reality. With the help of Sunrise Brands, the actress is launching a clothing and accessories collection for women that will hit shelves in the fall of 2015.

Melissa is no stranger to designing. She’s actually a trained designer, having studied at FIT in her college years. According to WWD, the actress says it was shoe designer Brian Atwood who at the time encouraged her to ditch her pinking shears and try her hand at comedy.

Melissa’s line will bow with a selection of casual sportswear options in a range of sizes that will include straight and plus. The brand has yet to be named, but it already has its lineup for next season in order. Prices are reasonable, ranging from $39 for a top to $118 for bottoms. The second collection promises to be more contemporary as well as more expensive.

Melissa said she teamed up with Sunrise on the project because she felt “they were committed to changing the plus-size game.” Still, her line has a lot left to do before it makes its debut in stores. For one, it needs to figure out which stores are going to even carry the collection. Melissa is reportedly courting many retailers and has the intent to make the range available online.

We honestly can’t wait to see what she comes up with. We’re very familiar with Melissa the actress, but it will be very cool to see her in the role she trained for as a designer.

Lorde Suffers a Double-Denim Disaster at LAX

After a grand old time at the 2014 American Music Awards, Lorde was sneakily snapped at California’s LAX airport wearing far too much denim for our liking. Even though she needn’t look glam whilst travelling, there’s a few lessons we can learn from Lorde’s double-denim mishap.

The New Zealand singing sensation donned a coordinated ensemble, which isn’t too surprising considering she’s chummy as all hell with matchy-matchy’s biggest fan, Taylor Swift, but this twin set wasn’t pleasing to the eye. We’ll be the first to admit we love a bit of double denim, and a twin set all the same, but the biggest mistake you can make in denim is doubling up on the same wash.

Thankfully she broke it all up with a striped T-shirt, some grungy boots and chic cat-eyed shades, but, at this point, the damage was already done.

Although we’re not a fan of this particular getup, we’re excited to see her veer away from her go-to black jumpsuits and mannish tuxedos for the flight and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Nicole Kidman Wears Child-Friendly Prada for Paddington World Premiere

Nicole Kidman looked overly G-rated for the world premiere of kids movie Paddington at London’s Odeon Leicester Square on Sunday, November 23, in a ladylike frock by Prada.

The Australian actress donned a black sheer-sleeved midi dress from the fashion label’s Resort 2015 collection, with embellished piping fit for the red carpet. We think the crystal pocket and belt were a bit much, even though the vintage-school-teacher look suits Nicole’s demure appearance to a T.

The transparent brolly was more practical than attractive, and the sparkly jewels were overwhelming (not necessarily in a good way), but Nicole’s lace-up Christian Louboutin’s brought something chic and modern to the outfit.

The entire look, minus the shoes, was a bit old-fashioned for our liking, but if anyone can get away with this maidenly ensemble it’s definitely Nicole. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that the strawberry-blonde’s husband is a laid-back country singer, and not a royal highness, with outfits like these.

You Will Deal with Another Beyoncé Fishnet Mask on the Cover of Interview Germany

Some people prefer to show their ass on magazine covers, others only need to show a small part of their face for us to know who they are. This month, Beyoncé covers Interview Germany in full-on On The Run regalia: a fishnet mask and her face framed with a fur hood.

Just last night, Beyoncé released the platinum version of her now-legendary, self-titled album, which includes live video performances, a few new songs and some remixes. If the image looks familiar to you, that’s because Bey has taken quite a liking to covering her face in fishnet, thanks to her On The Run tour. Looks like she doesn’t plan on retiring the look anytime soon — and you will deal.

Part of her face is obscured, but the intensity coming from the eyes is hypnotizing. And do not get us started on those perfectly imperfect brows, groomed with the type of aspirational effortlessness street style guides on how to dress like a French girl are made of.

Old Navy Tries to Make Up for Plus-Size Denim Debacle

Image: Old Navy

Old Navy found itself in a world of drama earlier this month over its plus-sized women’s denim options. Shopper Renee Posey launched a petition calling for the retailer to reevaluate the way it prices and markets its women’s plus-sized denim. Not only are larger sizes significantly more expensive for women, but they’re also relegated to a separate department on Old Navy’s website, while the men’s plus-sized options are not only priced like straight-size pieces, but they’re also not put into separate categories. Posey took the retailer’s sexist and sizeist practices to task, imploring the brand to not up-charge larger women.

Gap came forward to say that the reason why its women’s plus-sized clothes are so much more expensive is because it uses special materials for those pieces. As the retailer explained in a statement, “For women, styles are not just larger sizes of other women’s items, they are created by a team of designers who are experts in creating the most flattering and on-trend plus styles, which includes curve-enhancing and curve-flattering elements such as four-way stretch materials and contoured waistbands, which most men’s garments do not include.”

Now, Old Navy plans to do more than just offer a lame excuse as to why larger women are being charged so much for these clothes. But don’t think it’s going to be changing those price points. According to Bloomberg, Old Navy will allow plus-sized customers to make returns in-store, a feature not previously available as the brand sells plus sizes exclusively online. Old Navy is also forming a panel that will meet four times a year to help improve the retailer’s larger options.

Perhaps it can start by making plus-sized clothing actually available in Old Navy stores and enact fairer pricing practices for women’s clothing.
