New Study Says People Think Better of You When You Wear Black

Besides the fact that Jay Z thinks it’s cool, turns out wearing black clothing also makes other people think you’re cool. A survey done by UK retailer buy t-shirts online asked 1,000 people how they perceive others based on the color of clothing they wear. Turns out, if you want to come across as confident, intelligent or sexy, you should bet on black.

A staggering 56% of people surveyed said that they see people who wear black as confident. The rates were particularly high for men, 64% of whom selected black as their choice color. 48% of women agreed. In fact, black came in first or second for a lot of the positive traits mentioned in the survey. Following black, red and blue came in as the second and third most confident colors – good to know in case your LBD is stuck at the dry cleaners and you need alternatives. 

Red was the color most associated with arrogance, so the color clearly has a lot of different connotations, depending on who you ask. Pink was the color most associated with a lack of intelligence, with only 5% of people asked linking the color to braininess. Sorry Barbie

But overall, if you’re trying to impress people with your attire, your best option seems to be black, as “black came first or second in most ‘good’ traits (for example confidence, intelligence and sexiness) and barely figured in the “bad” traits (arrogance).” So forget doom and gloom: black has a new connotation and it’s all good.

Joan Smalls Isn’t Your Average School Teacher on Vogue Mexico (Forum Buzz)

It takes versatility to become a model with staying power in the fashion industry nowadays and Joan Smalls is certainly showing us range this month. She turns up the heat on Lui‘s racy September cover and now photographs demure and commercial for Vogue Mexico. Shot by Russell James, the current face of Balmain and Calvin Klein Underwear appears to channel a school teacher, posing in a studio setup wearing a Christian Dior top and skirt.

The main cover (above) left our forums divided. “Very pretty! Really good for this edition of Vogue,” admired Aedlacir, hitting us off on a high note.

“Love the covers. About time!” praised fashionlover2001 in agreement.

Sharing the same positive attitude was thatsfierce, raving, “I love it. Joan looks stunning, I just love her strong face” with forum member Nepenthes adding, “Love this. Joan looks powerful!”

The rest of us were left underwhelmed. “A big ‘NO’ on this cover. It’s very bad,” exclaimed a disappointed burbuja8910.

Forum member marsnoop2 wasn’t feeling the main cover, either: “Styling is terrible, and I’m not enjoying this school teacher direction. It just makes me sad, although I love Joan’s expression in the cover where she’s seated.”

“I hate the muted colors,” A.D.C. disapproved, adding fuel to the fire.

“I think this could have been a lot more powerful, a lot more glamorous, especially for a September issue,” expressed TheVeed.

Marc Jacobs Posts Throwback Videos from That Infamous Perry Ellis Grunge Show

We could all use a little Flashback on this fine Friday and Marc Jacobs is happy to provide one. The designer regrammed some videos from his 1992 grunge show that famously got him fired from Perry Ellis. Proving that the supermodels of yesteryear STILL GOT IT, Kate Moss makes an appearance, first holding hands down the runway with another model (which Jacobs said was an early reference to gay marriage) and then again by herself in a flowy ombré gown. In the caption, Jacobs naturally doesn’t hesitate to use his and Moss’ new favorite phrase, basic bitch.

But of course, the real showstopping video came from queen of the catwalk Naomi Campbell whose turn down the runway is just a reminder of how great of a walker she really is. Campbell glides down the runway with a cool confidence and swagger that simply can’t be duplicated. Girl was so smooth that she even caught another model off guard as she exited at the end of her turn. Guess that’s just the effect Ms. Campbell has on folks. (more…)

Miley Cyrus Stars on a Messy UK ELLE Cover (Forum Buzz)

The British edition of ELLE successfully managed to do Kristen Stewart justice on the cover of its September issue, generating rave reviews on our forums. ELLE is now creating buzz for its October installment featuring Miley Cyrus for what the magazine describes as its “boldest issue yet.” The edition also marks a special occasion for the publication as ELLE celebrates its 30th anniversary this month. Photographed by Matt Irwin, the controversial star is already asking for trouble as she poses before a paint-splattered background wearing a crisp white Emporio Armani suit.

Our forum members couldn’t wait to see the cover. “Gosh, getting sick of Miley and ELLE UK for that matter. The captions read like a for dummies handbook,” laughed jescajade in pity the moment the cover dropped.

“Ugh, what a downgrade from last month’s cover, really weary of this girl. I don’t know whether it’s just the quality of the image, but the shot itself doesn’t look too good,” expressed Benn98 in disbelief.

GIVENCHYlover described the cover as “messy” with gossiping soon ranting, “I’ll never purchase anything with that on the cover.”

“The only [thing] that gets me excited about this issue is the Balmain x H&M collaboration. Miley looks good but the background is too messy for my liking. The contrast between the white blazer and the whole abstract painting is somehow painful for the eyes and to be honest I don’t understand why they didn’t go with a simple background,” wondered Aizanara.

Although the cover seemed to show some promise as ThatGuyPaul confessed: “I actually quite like this!”

Emma Watson Is Going Green on the Red Carpet This Month

Emma Watson is going green. The actress is taking part in Livia Firth’s Green Carpet Challenge this September as she promotes her film Regression. Watson kicked things off by regramming images from her stylist Sarah Slutsky, detailing their new commitment to ethical clothing.

A quick trip to Slutsky’s Instagram page and you will see a few pictures of Ms. Watson’s outfits accompanied by captions explaining the garments and where they came from. In one image, she highlights an Erdem dress whose fabric was sourced from Italy. In another, Watson is wearing an Edun dress, a brand which Slutsky notes is “building long-term, sustainable growth opportunities by supporting manufacturers, community-based initiatives and partnering with African artists and artisans.”

The project helps heighten awareness of exactly where this luxury clothing is coming from and also highlights the effect fashion has globally. The economies the fashion industry supports (for better or for worse) are numerous and it puts into perspective that sustainable fashion is important to all of us – no matter where we come from.

We will definitely be watching to see what other outfits Slutsky dreams up for Watson as she carries on with her press tour.

J.Crew Is Going Old School in an Effort to Woo Back Customers

Things haven’t been going so well for J.Crew as of late and now the retailer is scrambling to find ways to woo back the customers they’ve been losing. Since creative director Jenna Lyons took the helm, J.Crew has transformed from a mall store frequented by wealthy, preppy soccer moms to a favorite of the fashion set – but that hasn’t necessarily been good for sales. You can only sell so many rhinestone-embellished denim skinnies and sequin pencil skirts, after all. Now, J.Crew is looking to win back customers by kicking it old school.

CEO Mickey Drexler says the retailer will roll out a selection of heritage items that will feature clothes, well, that normal people wear. WWD mentions “ballet flats, cashmere, the Jackie cardigans, the Regent blazers, washed shirts and denim.” Yup – just regular, good-quality garments. J.Crew will also devote less energy to its Collection range, which from a fashion standpoint is a little disappointing but necessary, we suppose, for the retailer’s survival.
