Eight Years Later…Natasha Poly Scores the October Cover of Vogue Germany (Forum Buzz)

You’ve probably already read your September issues from cover to cover by now, and just as well because the October issues have started to trickle out. The latest to surface on our forums is Vogue Germany. The magazine released its October 2014 cover just before the weekend via its website. The cover features Natasha Poly, whose last cover for German Vogue was back in June 2006. This time around, we see the Russian beauty shot by photographic duo Luigi & Iango, sporting a Brigitte Bardot inspired look while wearing Givenchy.

Our forum members have mixed feelings regarding the cover. “She looks a bit Bardot/Schiffer-esque. But anything with Queen Poly is a yes in my book!” wrote orchidee.

“Gorgeous, even all that ugly text layout can’t ruin her beauty!” commented Miss Dalloway.

Benn98 also noticed the evident Bardot inspiration: “I like the Bardot-esque pin-up vibe. So Natasha’s last Vogue DE cover was in 2006, meaning the gap was almost a decade. It actually baffles me, she’s probably one of the most hardest working girls in the industry.”

It seems most of our forum members aren’t feeling it, however. “Mmm… I sort of don’t like it… I find the makeup a bit too much… She looks too beige…” shared KissMiss.

Abracadabra acknowledged the amount of post-production, “This is terrible, she looks slightly unrecognizable and the amount of Photoshop is shocking.”

“Dreadful cover, the Photoshop ruined it and made her look like an alien!” agreed Urban Stylin.

Christopher Kane and NARS Team Up for Spring 2015

This morning, NARS announced its latest collaboration with fashion designer Christopher Kane. The collection won’t be launching until May 2015, but it is said to offer a “full color collection” with products for eyes, lips and cheeks. The limited-edition cosmetics will be previewed at Kane’s show this afternoon in London, but pictures of the packaging have yet to be released.

Kane and NARS have collaborated on the runway for the designer’s London shows since 2012, so the pairing seemed like a natural fit for the two. “NARS has the same unapologetic aesthetic that is signature to the Christopher Kane brand and I’m excited to share what we’ve created together,” said Kane in the official press release. Looks like we have to wait and see the runway images from today’s show to get a sneak peek.

Urban Outfitters Pulls Offensive Blood-Splattered Vintage Kent State Sweatshirt

The most important rule of the hipster canon is to always reaffirm your edginess. Whether it’s being ironically racist in a Native American headdress or a T-shirt that’s some kind of dubious throwback to Nazi Germany, pushing (overstepping) boundaries in the most annoying, offensive way possible is crucial to the hipster lifestyle. Which is why it should come as no surprise that mall purveyor of the Brooklyn-centric aesthetic, Urban Outfitters, is coming under fire for another glaringly offensive product it’s shilling in the name of fashion.

This time, the retailer defiles the legacy of the antiwar protesters that were famously slaughtered at Kent State University by the Army National Guard during a campus demonstration against the Vietnam War in the 70s. The retailer was offering a one-of-a-kind faded vintage sweatshirt bearing the university’s logo. It’s all good until you notice the speckles of red dotting the sweatshirt that look a lot like blood splatter, which would be cool, if four students hadn’t died during the protest that happened on May 4, 1970. 

Of course, shoppers took to Twitter to call out Urban Outfitters and the brand quickly released a statement of apology. It says the red marks weren’t meant to look like blood splatter, and instead are what’s left of the original sweatshirt color.

“It was never our intention to allude to the tragic events that took place at Kent State in 1970 and we are extremely saddened that this item was perceived as such,” the company wrote. “The one-of-a-kind item was purchased as part of our sun-faded vintage collection. There is no blood on this shirt nor has this item been altered in any way. The red stains are discoloration from the original shade of the shirt and the holes are from natural wear and fray. Again, we deeply regret that this item was perceived negatively and we have removed it immediately from our website to avoid further upset.”

So, no one is glad that the weekend is over, but David Gandy is giving us all a reason to power though this Monday. The model is launching his very first underwear line with Marks & Spencer, for which he’s released a preview video — and yeah, it’s pretty steamy.

Whoever came up with the concept for this short, we thank you a thousand times. It’s just David lying in bed, lounging in a couple of chairs in his underwear, his toned upper body quivering with every breath as he cheekily flashes those baby blues. There are a lot of ab and crotch shots, and we’re not mad at it. Especially at the end when he gives a sly smile to the camera — it feels like he’s right there in bed with us.

Jay Z and Maybe-Pregnant Beyoncé Release Part 1 of “Bang Bang” Short Film

The Carter-Knowles family has been busy this weekend. First, Jay Z may or may not have announced that Beyoncé is pregnant again. According to sources, the rapper changed the lyrics of his song “Beach is Better” to “‘Cause she pregnant with another one.” Now, of course, the world will be scrutinizing any photo that’s come out of Beyonce in recent weeks, trying to find that telltale baby bump.

While you’re all doing that (we’re waiting for an official announcement before we start speculating), the rest of us can take in Bey and Jay’s latest, which is part 1 of a short film entitled Bang Bang. If you were one of the esteemed few able to make it to the “On the Run” tour this summer, you will have already seen it – the film opened the show. The pair is pictured riding through the desert (BECAUSE THEY’RE ON THE RUN, GET IT?) before stopping at a diner for a cigar break. While Jigga puffs away, he notices the guy sitting a few booths down from them is reading a newspaper which happens to have the couple’s “wanted” faces on the front cover. Instead of leaving quietly, Jay walks over to the guy, puts out his cigar in his cheeseburger and exits. Because the best way to make sure people don’t recognize you is to do something supremely dickish.

Jean Paul Gaultier Is Getting Rid of Ready-to-Wear

There will be one less collection showing at Paris Fashion Week after this season. Jean Paul Gaultier has announced that the ready-to-wear range he will be showing in a few weeks will be his last. The designer is doing away with RTW to focus his attentions on other projects, though mainly his couture and fragrance options. 

While it is always sad when a designer downsizes, in this case the move makes sense. “We looked at various possibilities considering the present state of the company and we have reached the same conclusion,” he wrote in a letter to WWD. “For some time, I have found true fulfillment in working on the haute couture and it allows me to express my creativity and my taste for research and experimentation.” 

Perhaps the move is an indication that Gaultier wasn’t doing so well in the ready-to wear market. Sure, his designs are truly creative and reflective of his great mind, but we’re thinking that his aesthetic wasn’t resonating with customers. Besides, his wacky proclivities seem to be better suited to a couture market. 

Fragrance is expected to make up the majority of Gaultier’s business once he nixes ready-to-wear (about 80 percent), sources say. 

“After more than 38 years spent producing men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections, it seems to us that the time has come to stop some of our activities and to concentrate principally on the development of the haute couture, of perfumes and to certain collaborations that I have not yet had time to explore,” he said. “This is a new beginning, I will be able to express again my creativity fully and without constraints.”
