Lady Gaga Upsets Japanese Fans with Korean Character-Printed Jumpsuit

Lady Gaga loves to use her wardrobe to get people talking, but one of her recent outfits caused more of a stir than she likely bargained for. The “ARTPOP” singer spent part of this week in Tokyo, frequently updating her Instagram with shots of all her exploits. But one particular image got Gaga’s monsters up in arms. The singer posted a photo of her posing in the city’s Roppongi district, clad in a colorful jumpsuit with the words “color” emblazoned across the front in Korean characters. A couple Japanese commenters saw the outfit and took offense, accusing Gaga of cultural insensitivity, saying that she’s ignorantly conflating Korean and Japanese culture.

Kotaku found a thread on Japanese forum 2ch discussing the gaffe, titled simply “Roppongi Wandering Lady Gaga [in] Japan, in the clothes of Hangul [Korean] characters! South Korea and Japan [are the same to] the Caucasian eye.” Or at least that’s how Google translates it. (more…)

Are we excited? Of course we are!

“Hell f***ing yes! So thrilled to see models on the cover of Vogue, was not expecting that at all. And especially happy to see Joan on the cover, I think she’s just wonderful,” exclaimed YoninahAliza.

“I’m so shocked! Hopefully this sells like hotcakes so that Anna will see that models on covers CAN move magazines. I like the breezy and fresh feel of the cover, but I think just Joan and Karlie would have worked much better,” analyzed orchidee.

And LastNight shared: “Perfect!!! Oh my goodness I am so unbelievably happy. These three girls were the most likely out of the current crop of models to be on the very front if US Vogue were to do a model cover and here they are! It looks lovely from that photo and I’m assuming there will be more girls on the fold out. It makes great sense to have a model cover for US Vogue at this time, it feels right. Could not be happier and so glad that all the speculation in the Cover Rumor Thread didn’t amount to nothing.”

Is this the best cover image of the season? Not really, but the fact that U.S. Vogue has finally put young, fresh models on its cover again is reason enough to be deliriously happy about this. Hallelujah!

Freja Beha Erichsen and luxury jewelry retailer Tiffany & Co. may sound like an odd pairing at first. But the brand’s Fall 2014 campaign proves the collaboration is a perfect match.

Although our forum members were not entirely convinced about this campaign after the arrival of the first shot of her posing on a rooftop with a camera and looking somewhat grim (pictured above), the latest shots certainly changed their minds. Freja carries a small girl on her shoulders and the model looks rather sultry while posing in a bathtub. Adorable, cool and sexy.

“Tiffany is adding a cool factor to their brand. Freja looks amazing!” enthused member ParisFashionMuse.

Alien Sex Friend had similar feelings: “Finally Tiffany looks younger.”

“The last images, yesss! Very striking,” posted an excited Benn98. (more…)

Karen Elson Brings Old Hollywood Vibe to Vogue Ukraine’s September Cover (Forum Buzz)

Vogue Ukraine hired top model Karen Elson for its September cover. The cover was photographed by Yelena Yemchuk and channels some serious old Hollywood glamour. Like almost every Vogue September cover this year, the image features a Louis Vuitton Fall 2014 ensemble.

Members of our forums were enthralled. The first one to point out that she “loves the glam, old Hollywood vibe of the cover” was kokobombon.

GIVENCHYlover called the cover “beautiful,” while Kanna went on to say, “Beautiful and outstanding.”

Royal-Galliano gave credit to the photographer. “Yemchuk is amazing. So happy about this!” he wrote.

KissMiss thought Karen’s expression wasn’t great, but the cover was gorgeous nonetheless: “The cover is really beautiful… I started liking Yelena’s photography a lot… She’s got her own style.”

I concur with other members. This cover image oozes classy glamour in a unique way. Karen is giving it a dramatic, lofty feel, and it works.

Forever 21, Wildfox and Lord & Taylor to Launch Barbie-Inspired Collections This Fall

Forget orange — pink is coming back as the new black this fall now that Mattel is teaming up with a series of brands on capsule collections inspired by the iconic Barbie doll. Forever 21, Wildfox and Lord & Taylor will each release a capsule collection as part of Mattel’s efforts to highlight the doll as a fashion icon. The toy company seems to have already begun to give Barbie a stylish edge, since it recently announced plans to release a Karl Lagerfeld-inspired doll. We guess actual clothing is simply the next step.

According to WWD, each retailer’s collection draws inspiration from decades past. Lord & Taylor will focus on the classic polish of the 50s and 60s, Wildfox, the lively colorful 80s and Forever 21, the 90s. Each brand will offer a range of products. Forever 21 is expected to roll out a pretty all-encompassing line. In addition to apparel and accessories, the 29-piece collection will offer cosmetics and athletic wear with prices ranging from $3.90 to $24.90. Lord & Taylor will exclusively sell sleepwear ($37.50-$183) aimed at a more mature customer.

Wildfox is known for its cheeky, playful aesthetic and is taking quite literal inspiration for this collaboration. The Los Angeles-based brand is rolling out an eight-piece offering containing life-size replicas of some of Malibu Barbie’s outfits from the 80s. You’ll find swimsuits, denim and also sunglasses — most notably a pair of oversized round pale pink frames with rose-colored lenses. You will literally be able to dress like a Barbie doll.

The collections won’t all hit shelves at the same time. Wildfox is planning for a November 15 launch date, while Forever 21 and Lord & Taylor will release on September 5 and September 14 respectively.

Yep, it’s a lot of pink, but it will be interesting to see each retailer’s take on the theme in full, particularly Lord & Taylor, since its customer base is a bit older. It’s hard to imagine a grown woman traipsing around in Barbie PJs, after all.

Taylor Swift Amps Up the Edge in Bec & Bridge on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show

These days, it’s pretty rare to see Taylor Swift in anything other than a candy-coloured, matchy-matchy ensemble. So, when the pop singer stepped out onto The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in a black and pink floral print dress by Bec & Bridge, we were happy for two reasons. First, Taylor stepped away from her beloved crop and skirt combo, but most importantly, she turned to an Australian label to do so. (more…)
